Re:No excessive forceA useful eyewitness report over at Daily Kos says basically the guy that was being a serious PITA. It also corrects me on a couple of points on when the police became involved but makes clear that this kid was being a self-centered, disruptive jerk.
A local paper has some updates, including notes from the police about how markedly different the student's behavior was when there was or wasn't a camera pointing at him, also that one of the videos circulating on YouTube was shot with the student's own camera.

Re:Move over Geraldo.
Why don't you give this a read and tell me what you think.
The official in charge said enough, so that's enough. They were at the end, he was rambling and making statements instead of asking a direct question, they gave him additional time and still he rambled. Eventually, he ran out of time. He escalated the issue by resisting. The cops were on his ass from the beginning because he rushed the mic after hearing they were cutting off questions, and by God he wanted to get his in.
This wasn't a performance on a street corner. This was an event in a controlled setting with rules. They didn't touch him because of what he said but rather because of how he acted.
Just because you have an opinion, doesn't mean you have the right to be heard. There is no right to a forum for your opinion. UF isn't required to allow you to speak as long as you want. -
Re:His nameOh, and after you read my previous post, keep in mind that even the guy getting arrested agrees with me. "As (Meyer) was escorted down stairs (at the University Auditorium) with no cameras in sight, he remained quiet, but once the cameras made their way down stairs he started screaming and yelling again," Mallo wrote.
Mallo was one of two officers who actually rode in the vehicle as Meyer was escorted to the Alachua County jail, and she said said he told them during the ride: "I am not mad at you guys, you didn't do anything wrong, you were just trying to do your job," according to Mallo's account.
Mallo also wrote in her report that he asked, at one point, if cameras would be present at the jail. Of course, I'm sure you'll say that he did nothing wrong, right? Officers then proceeded to attempt to remove Meyer from the room, but when he resisted, they placed him on the ground and tried to handcuff him. The six officers who actually took part in holding Meyer down while he was being handcuffed reported that they were only able to get a handcuff on his right hand because he was squirming so much. So, I guess you think that the police should have just let him go. First he doesn't leave, so they should have said, "Oh, you won't leave? Oh well, I guess you can stay. Here is the microphone back."
But instead, they try to escort him out as he is screaming "HELP! HELP!" at the top of his lungs. As you can see from the video, when he gets close to the door, he plants his feet and charges an officer. I guess you think that the cops should have simply said, "Oh, you REALLY want to stay. We're sorry, here's the microphone. Would like to hold our guns?"
Well, they didn't do that either. Since he wouldn't leave when asked, and fought back while being escorted out, they tried to put cuffs on him. Six police officers could not hold the guys arms steady enough to get the cuffs on him. Do you think the cops should have said, "OK, we give up. You've beaten us. Please allow us to leave so you can fling shit around the auditorium without interruption." Well, nope. Not these cops. They would not grant him his Constitutional dung flinging rights.
That's when the tasing came in. And even then, this guy still resisted, screaming and yelling the whole way down... well at least the part where cameras were present. -
Re:DS does 10
I own a DS. I seem to get 8-10 hours from Super Mario 64 DS. I have heard as much as 12 hours, but I suspect that may be from someone using mainly GBA carts. I have also heard as little as 6-7 hours, and that would include some wireless play.
Here is an AP review
A quote:
"I managed 7-1/2 hours of battery life on a single charge, playing graphics-intensive games, blasting the music through the stereo speakers and connecting online with another DS."
Though it does not say if the wireless was used the entire time. -
A Colossus With Weak KneesPaul Craig Roberts was one of the architects of supply side economics under Reagan. He's having some serious misgivings about all this deficit spending and globalization -- 20 years too late unfortunately.
By Paul Craig Roberts
If George Bush and John Kerry were aware of the problems that await the next president, they would be vying to throw the election, not to win it.
Job loss at home and failure abroad have already written the script which will sweep away the next administration.
Recession could return by the inauguration before the economy ever regains the jobs lost to the 2001 recession. Second quarter 2004 economic growth came in 20% less than expected. The consumer is showing weakness, and crude oil prices have reached record highs. Personal savings remain low by historical standards.
On August 3 the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that seasonally adjusted real per capita incomes declined in June to levels below those reached in April. Total personal real spending declined 0.9% in June to the level of last February.
As the Bureau of Labor Statistics made clear in its July 30 report, the US economy is suffering not only from weak job growth but also from a loss of better paying jobs.
Only 65% of the 5.3 million workers who were laid off from long term jobs during the first three years of President Bush's administration were reemployed by January 2004. That means only about 3.5 million of the 5.3 million laid off workers were able to find new jobs during two years of economic recovery.
Of those who found new jobs, 57%--about 2 million workers--took jobs paying less than their previous positions. About 1.2 million of the workers who found new jobs experienced pay cuts of 20% or more.
It is really disturbing that this job loss may have occurred in the absence of a recession. The conventional definition of recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. However, on July 30 the Bureau of Economic Analysis released the revised GDP data for 2001, and the recession, as conventionally measured, has disappeared. The revised data does not show two consecutive negative quarters, and for 2001 the economy grew 0.8%. Did we experience not only a job loss recovery, but also a job loss nonrecession?
There was no recession in the second quarter of this year, but BLS data show 131,000 fewer American computer software engineers employed in the second quarter than in the first quarter of 2004--a decline of 15% in three months. Employment of computer scientists and systems analysts declined by 51,000 in the second quarter. Employment of computer programmers fell 16,000.
Despite the horrendous job loss, the unemployment rates for software engineers, computer scientists and programmers fell, which suggests that technical professionals are discouraged and have ceased to search for jobs in their occupations.
The decline in high-tech professions in the US is also reflected in the collapse in computer engineering enrollments in America's premier engineering schools. Over the past several years, M.I.T., Georgia Tech, and UC Berkeley have experienced computer engineering enrollment declines of 43%.
More unprecedented bad news comes from the Internal Revenue Service. For the first time ever, the real incomes of Americans shrank for two consecutive years. In 2002 Americans repor

Censorship: Sign of things to comeFrom the WSJ, regarding Bravo's CELEBRITY POKER SHOWDOWN losing their title sponsor:
But when the tequila started to flow on the set and the talk got a little racy in recent episodes, Cingular backed away from the table. The wireless company said it was yanking its sponsorship of the program, effective with Thursday's show. Although Cingular had no problem with the gambling elements, it was shocked - shocked - to find the kind of drinking and trash-talking that generally go hand in hand with poker.
I'd rather have the show go on without the title sponsor than see the show not aired at all. Sure, NBC/Bravo may lose a little bit of money if they have to front the the $250,000 "prize pool" themselves instead of from [insert company name here], but that money is going to charity. So the celebs have a little drink along the way? What's the big deal -- it's cable!! As Dave Navarro and Richard Kind said on last week's episode: it's good TV.

Back in my days as a wee youth, I reviewed movies for the Off Campus (teen) section of the Ocala Star-Banner. Several of my colleagues were under the impression that we wouldn't get to see any more movies if we gave bad reviews to them; I pointed out that the newspaper (not the movie studio) was paying for the movie tickets, so it didn't matter whether the review was positive or negative.
I will say that the temptation to give a glowing review to any new product is very strong when (a) you're not getting a lot of products and (b) the products are at least promising. Back in the days of the Amiga, there were only a couple of years in which reviews were objective, and that's only because there was real competition in the marketplace. Once most of the developers left, glowing reviews returned to the forefront.
