    It's been done http://mlns.starring.se/ and in one case it worked so well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_security that the spammers declared war on the internet in defense of their right to spam.

    This was just some poorly done publicity stunt, probably dreamed up in by some PHB deep in the dungeons of their marketing department.
    As I mentioned in an earlier post what you said there isn't far from the truth. The story about it is availble at starring.se

    Spray belongs to Lycos these days, and the screensaver was developed by Starring, a marketing company.

    Interesting lead, I followed it trough some more and checked their site

    Luckily, that explained the situation, starring is a marketing company, that were contacted by spray(a Lycos company in Sweden) to Get more people to start using Spray's e-mail service.

    There you have it, it is all a marketing campaign to attract more users to Spray(and Lycos) mail. I guess they made it quite well, mentioned on slashdot and all...
