It works (better than *ANY* single other "so-called 'solution'" there is for more:

1.) Speed (blocking banner ads + hardcoded favorite sites)
2.) Security (blocking known bad sites/servers that serve up malware &/or malicious exploits via scripts, botnet C&C servers + their payload servers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed, redirect poisoned, or DNS amplication attacked DNS servers)
4.) Even anonymity (to an extent only on the latter, vs. DNS request logs)

Hosts do FAR MORE with LESS, by far, + more efficiently...

(Even to the point of shoring up DNS issues in redirect poisonings, being downed, DNS amplification attacks, rogue DNS servers malware makers use, etc. - et al, by simply AVOIDING DNS, letting your local system be the resolver since my app refreshes your fav. sites @ the TOP of a hosts file, from local RAM caching that information - also lightening up DNS server loads, which admins of them *should* really like too...)
