I use a "SSD" (not flash based)... apk
You're right (writes are INCREDIBLY fast): I tried to offset that on my WD Velociraptor using a Promise Ex-8350 128mb ECC RAM caching RAID controller I didn't list earlier which *does* help some (especially on writes via delayed writes I suspect coupled with the disk's iirc 8mb RAM buffer).
On dataprocessing (I literally spent 20++ yrs. in the field as a coder doing SQL database work): ONLY real dataprocessing I do now is hosts file processing using this application I wrote:
APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:
http://start64.com/index.php?o...
It's used to import, normalize & deduplicate + validate the data from 12 reputable sites in the security community that produce said data. I do the work on the SSD I noted I have. Not same tech as Flash though.
(That data works for more speed, security, & reliability)
The program's HEAVY on string processing: hence, WHY I figured that a faster CPU would help (file's getting big now, 3,366,444++ known bad sites.
It's taking a LOT longer now due to the size of the file nowadays.
This happened to me before.
I had an AMD DualCore that eventually, around 1++ million records, took 40 minutes to do that job on that number of records - I got the machine I listed, & that SAME DATA took only 15 minutes!
I was hoping for the same increase in speed/decrease in time for the process to finish, but... from what You're saying, there isn't MUCH of a boost (which is why I noted that those benchmarks *might* be deceiving).
I do know, however, that string processing work is HIGHLY CPU INTENSIVE - so, the only way to know, is to test on these high-end rigs nowadays.
APK
P.S.=> Hitting a gamer's forum might solve this: They tend to be helpful & have high end rigs (let them download the app, & process the initial data which is MUCH SMALLER than those millions of hosts file records I've built up here since 1997, by far (maybe 250,000 records, tops))... apk

ABSOLUTELY: Hosts work here... apk
I populate my custom hosts file via 12 reliable security community sources & articles + posts like yours (thanks) via APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit -> http://start64.com/index.php?o... to get more speed, security, reliability online & more (details shown in link as to those benefits specifically are enumerated there in that link).
* Courtesy "yours truly", 100% free & hosted + recommended by the BEST ( MalwareBytes ), on the planet per this very recent test of efficacyhttp://www.av-test.org/en/news/news-single-view/17-software-packages-in-a-repair-performance-test-after-malware-attacks/ on their website here -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...
Enjoy... & kudos to you for having the good sense to use hosts files where they apply (TONS of places for more speed, security, & reliability online) AND your pointing out the article source which has MORE DATA on blocking this malwares' C&C servers etc., here -> http://blogs.cisco.com/securit... specifically/for your & others' reference!
APK
P.S.=> IMPORTANT: ANOTHER EXCELLENT SOURCE (vs. CryptoLocker that's FAR MORE COMPREHENSIVE) -> http://garwarner.blogspot.com/... (Gar Warner's excellent - He posts here & did once, hence how I obtained his excellent works' analysis...)... apk

"Exactamundo"... apk
It is more efficient & here's how you can get the best custom hosts there is easily http://it.slashdot.org/comment... from 12 reputable & reliable security community sources via this program of mine:
APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:
http://start64.com/index.php?o...
(Details are there, or in the 1st link above, for what it can do for you for more speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity + more...)
* To quote Howard Stark from the film "Captain America":
"It's as strong as steel & a third the weight"
(Especially vs. browser addons, crippled by default OR owned by advertisers to be so, and in slower heavier messagepassing bound usermode vs. hosts in kernelmode, AND, vs. DNS, using less power, complexity + room for breakdown & slower remote queries by being the 1st default queried by the IP stack itself... complimenting DNS by lightening up request loads for admins of them AND fixing their redirect poisoned, DNS amp attacked, & downed issues...)
APK
P.S.=> Enjoy... apk

Hosts don't protect vs. DNS issues? Wrong!

THIS TAKES THE CAKE FROM YOU, PER MY SUBJECT-LINE ABOVE:
"No wonder you're so retarded" - by Khyber (864651) on Wednesday January 07, 2015 @12:09PM (#48755857) Homepage
Face fact: I shot you down with your own words, quoted http://slashdot.org/comments.p... easily stating you KNOW DNS issues are solved for users via hosts!
FACT: Custom hosts files let you AVOID DNS totally & make you go faster via sites you spend most time on, resolving faster than remote DNS queries... by far!
E.G. -> For me, like it would for anyone else since folks online DO spend their time @ a limited number of websites mostly? It's 95++% more speed due to hardcoded hosts favorite sites @ the top of a hosts file (equating to roughly 2-3 million remotely slower DNS indexed entries with 25 of them here for example).
Do the math. It shows you the truth (which YOU don't & won't + CAN'T ADMIT, or you'll have MORE EGG ON YOUR FACE, Khyber)

LMAO - Get ready to "eat your words" AGAIN, Khyber:
(Learn to read my posts, I already covered this vs. DNS & hosts hardcoded via my ability to write a program that the BEST security team on the planet per this very recent test http://www.av-test.org/en/news... Some of my favorites only:
Windows NT Magazine (now Windows IT Pro) April 1997 "BACK OFFICE PERFORMANCE" issue, page 61
(&, for work done for EEC Systems/SuperSpeed.com on PAID CONTRACT (writing portions of their SuperCache program increasing its performance by up to 40% via my work) albeit, for their SuperDisk & HOW TO APPLY IT, took them to a finalist position @ MS Tech Ed, two years in a row 2000-2002, in its HARDEST CATEGORY: SQLServer Performance Enhancement). Ask for CEO Mr. Eric Dickman regarding myself, Alex Kowalski.
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, 1997, "Top Freeware & Shareware of the Year" issue page 210, #1/first entry in fact (my work is there)
PC-WELT FEB 1998 - page 84, again, my work is featured there
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, WINTER 1998 - page 92, insert section, MUST HAVE WARES, my work is again, there
PC-WELT FEB 1999 - page 83, again, my work is featured there
CHIP Magazine 7/99 - page 100, my work is there
GERMAN PC BOOK, Data Becker publisher "PC Aufrusten und Repairen" 2000, where my work is contained in it
HOT SHAREWARE Numero 46 issue, pg. 54 (PC ware mag from Spain), 2001 my work is there, first one featured, yet again!
Also, a British PC Mag in 2002 for many utilities I wrote, saw it @ BORDERS BOOKS but didn't buy it... by that point, I had moved onto other areas in this field besides coding only...
Being paid for an article that made me money over @ PCPitstop in 2008 for writing up a guide that has people showing NO VIRUSES/SPYWARES & other screwups, via following its point, such as THRONKA sees here -> http://www.xtremepccentral.com...
It's also been myself helping out the folks at the UltraDefrag64 project (a 64-bit defragger for Windows), in showing them code for how to do Process Priority Control @ the GUI usermode/ring 3/rpl 3 level in their program (good one too), & being credited for it by their lead dev & his team... see here -> http://ultradefrag.sourceforge... or here http://sourceforge.net/tracker...
Which ended up fixing a "bug" for them later, here -> http://sourceforge.net/p/ultra... via its implementation (partially, NOT fully yet as I outline it & use in my applications such as this one -> http://www.start64.com/index.p...

What do I have to say about that much above? I can't say it any better, than this was stated already (from the greatest book of all time, the "tech manual for life" imo):
"But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me." - Corinthians Chapter 15, Verse 10
(And, because I got LUCKY to have been exposed to some really GREAT classmates, professors, & colleagues on the job over time as well)

Hosts protect vs. DNS amplification attacks
"Further, you've completely ignored spoofing of addresses combined with amplification attacks (send out a 64 byte DNS request pretending to be the DDoS target, get 4kB sent to the target)." - by DavidRawling (864446) on Friday December 26, 2014 @11:12AM (#48675603)
How/Why? Hosts files work for your favorite sites, avoiding DNS & also resolving FASTER locally from RAM once cached (most efficiently, since both the IP stack & local diskcache are KERNELMODE subsystems).
* You Fail...
(Me, by way of comparison? I don't: I actually built a program that populates hosts vs. botnets, & maliciously coded sites for more security, and for speed, those hardcoded favorite sites work for that as well as security vs. DNS amplification attack, moron... & for reliability as well, once those sites are either downed OR redirect poisoned)

"Or just kill the connection of infected machines at the ISP. It might ever increase awareness." - Anonymous Coward on Wednesday December 31, 2014 @06:41AM (#48703609) FROM -> http://mobile.slashdot.org/com...
See subject-line: That's one of the BEST (& most sensible + practical) approaches suggested here on
/. (since the recent wave of DDoS attacks, e.g. SONY), imo...NOW: As to what you CAN do vs. MANY TYPES of DDoS/DoS? Right here, listed (for Microsoft servers mostly, though there ARE some measures that'd apply to *NIX boxes also) -> http://games.slashdot.org/comm...
(I.E.-> It shows the parameters to use vs. "1/2 open connections" that aren't responding, or rather, CAPABLE of responding due to IP address spoofs etc., & turns them off as you see fit based on the parameters you set).
I agree with the AC poster I quoted above TOTALLY!
(Great idea: Cut the infected/infested boxes off, the owners WILL call the ISP once their service is interrupted, & they can be cleaned up @ that point, removing infestation that makes them DDoS "zombies"...)
APK
P.S.=> Of course there's ALSO DNS DDoS - & until DNS itself is fixed vs. it, the ONLY way I could think of (+ create a tool that protects you vs. bushwhacked DNS by avoiding it for your favorite sites you spend MOST of your time @ online) was this -> APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit http://start64.com/index.php?o... which a NICE part of "hardcoding" your fav sites not only protects you vs. DNS being downed or redirect poisoned (which 99.999% of ISP dns are NOT patched vs. the kaminsky flaw), but, also speeds you up, by resolving host-domain names to their IP address locally, cached in memory, faster than remote DNS resolutions too (double-bonus) - enjoy (it works, & to quote Howard Stark from the film "Captain America"? Well, hey: "It's stronger than steel, & a third the weight" of other "so-called 'solutions'"...)

Merry Christmas (& a present vs. this)
Article submitter here: This-> http://start64.com/index.php?o... solves THIS & other DNS issues by avoiding it FOR FAVORITE SITES (emphasizing that for the moron who downmddded me earlier on this same post since HE's ILLITERATE-> http://it.slashdot.org/comment... & LATER HERE AGAIN http://it.slashdot.org/comment... w/ BOTH POSTS pointing that out to him)...
ALL operating locally from RAM + your IP stack (hosts file) & diskcaching kernelmode subsystems (less messagepassing overheads & GREATER EFFICIENCY by far being ALL in ring 0/kernelmode native parts you already have that are proven + refined - For going faster, safer, & more reliably online).
* Enjoy...

I.E./E.G.-> I do for 24 of my fav. sites I spend 95++% of my time online, placing them @ the TOP of my hosts file to avoid DNS redirect poisoning (kaminsky bug of which 99.999% of ISP DNS are *NOT PATCHED* against mind you) & downed DNS too (or exploited ones per this article), & it ends up resolving sites FASTER locally from RAM once cached.
Equating to approximately 2-3 MILLION indexed REMOTE DNS lookups worth saved (wasting time querying remote DNS which is exploitable as hell & insecure mostly) & works for me locally faster & more reliably by far vs. such exploits this article notes + more 95++% of the time (per my router logs analyzed on where I spend my time online MOSTLY).

Now - Sub 4% of the time when I DO use remote DNS, I use OpenDNS (secured, filtered vs. threats, patched vs. the Kaminsky flaw & DNSSEC secured to its upstream updaters) BOTH in my router/firewall + OS IP Stack settings.

Hosts fix this issue & compliment DNS... apk
For 24 of my favorite sites hardcoded @ TOP of hosts avoiding DNS totally & resolving host-domain/subdomain to IP locally, faster from LOCAL system diskcache via a system of 100% pure kernelmode code (diskcache subsystem & tcpip.sys) accessed memory.
That equates to approximately 2-3 MILLION indexed lookups saved doing hosts hardcodes, vs. wasting time querying remote DNS (which is exploitable as hell & insecure, mostly) & works for me locally, completely under MY control!
I also redirect poisoning (kaminsky bug, of which 99.999% of ISP DNS are *NOT PATCHED* against mind you) & downed DNS too.
Thus, I surf FAR faster & more reliably by far (again even vs. such DNS exploits this article notes + far more), & 95++% of the time I do it here, the fastest possible from the 1st IP resolver queried by default (per my router logs my fav sites ARE where I am, literally, 95++% of the time online too) - pure kernelmode systems operations too, no less (no usermode bs).

AdBlock = Inferior + 'Souled-Out'... apk

APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:

A.) Hosts do more than:
1.) AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... )
2.) Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
3.) Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...B.) Hosts add reliability vs. downed/redirected dns (& overcome site redirects e.g.
/. beta).C.) Hosts secure vs. malicious domains too -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme... w/ less "moving parts" complexity
D.) Hosts files yield more:
1.) Speed (adblock & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote dns)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving malcontent + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable dns, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ isp level + weak vs DGA, & Fastflux + dynDNS botnets)
4.) Anonymity (vs. dns request logs + dnsbl's).---
* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ faster levels (ring 0) vs redundant inefficient addons (slowing slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ os, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).
* Addons = more complex + slow browsers in messagepassing (use a few concurrently & see) & are nullified by native browser methods - It's how Clarityray's destroying Adblock.
* Addons slowup slower usermode browsers layering on more - & bloat RAM consumption + excessive cpu use too (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)Instead, work w/ a more capable native kernelmode part you already have - hosts (An integrated part of the ip stack)

For the most comprehensive hosts file?
I created APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit -> http://start64.com/index.php?o... to do the MOST comprehensive job possible (populating my custom hosts file from 12 reputable & reliable sources in the security community for that data) vs. botnets, malicious script housing sites, servers serving up malware, ad banner blocking (to get my speed/bandwidth I paid for back & to protect myself vs. maliciously scripted ads, trackers, phish/spam payloads, of which since 2004 there have been TONS), etc. - et al.
To stop IP Address based attacks & tracking etc. (vs. domain-subdomain names that hosts uses, by far the most used vs. ip addresses due to fastflux &/or dynamic DNS using botnets, which use host-domain names to skirt by firewalls by changing IP addresses on domain/host names)?
I did a firewall ruleset for Windows -> hhttp://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=5117369&cid=46916145 to shear away trackers & such that you DON'T see (like you do ads for instance).
* It works... evidently, SO WELL, that someone couldn't disprove my points validly in this exchange & downmodded this same post, both here http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... AND HERE too http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... which says WORLDS on the validly & strength of this post (as well as hosts combined with firewalls).

P.S.=> I use another tool by NIRSOFT to monitor these things: Network Latency Viewer, which does the same thing (it was useful for populating that firewall rules list in the 2nd link above). In the end - Good choices on your part by-the-by, & "Great Minds Think Alike"... apk
