Re:Blazingly high?I used to own this transmeta-based subnotebook and I was really unimpressed with its battery life. I think it had a lot of other fancy hardware that more than made up for any power saved by the fancy processor.
When I bought that system, I was wowed by the transmeta mystique. Kind of ironic: I'm always correcting people who assume that faster processors mean faster systems, but then I went and assumed that a energy-frugal processor means an energy-frugal system.
Bottom line: always evaluate the system as a whole, and don't focus on one particular bit of tech that happens to be kewl.

Re:Picturebook
I'd agree with Rusty on the Picturebook. I've got a C1VPK - it's got the (fairly new) 667Mhz Crusoe, and it's got more than enough power to do what I need out of a subnotebook. And the battery life is good, too. On the battery the unit comes with (the "small" battery) I can watch a DivX movie on my trainride home (just over an hour trip) and have about 40% left on a charge. And this is under Linux; which, as Rusty said, has a horribly broken APM implementation on the Sony Vaio line. Longrun works nicely - the jogdial is fabulous - the camera's a great toy... but the ability to be banging out Perl scripts while listening to MP3s on the trainride home without worrying about my battery is one of the best things about it. I keep meaning to write a Linux-Picturebook HOWTO, but I can't seem to get together enough spare time to do that.
I've upgraded mine to 256MB of RAM using the third-party IO (Japanese) upgrade - that made a ton of difference in performance. I understand there's a new Picturebook coming... it's supposed to have the 733Mhz Crusoe.
And of course, the box runs fine under Windows. [ick]

Information...A lot of information about the Sony picturebook (of which I have the C1VE version with 600 MHz Crusoe, 128 MB, 12 GB HD) can be found on this site:

Just starting?
"I'm glad to see that the promise of transmeta is finally beginning to start being fulfilled."
Are you kidding me? Have you ever checked out and actually used one of the latest Sony Picturebooks? The last two USA versions of the Picturebook used the Crusoe, and both are mean little computer machines. Supposedly Linus uses a picturebook. I mean, who wouldn't love a fully functional Linux Workstation that is no larger than a VHS cassette tape? So there is no "finall begining to start" crap. The Crusoe has been fulfilling for over a year now, its promise of a high efficieny x86 CPU. AND YES, THE PICTUREBOOK RUNS LINUX JUST FINE! -
Re:It depends...
I picked up a C1XS (400Mhz PII, Sony Picturebook) on eBay for $1000. Runs Linux perfectly. Just love it. Check this out for example. Not a C1XS, but it's just a different CPU anyway...
