They may just get a seat.
They may just get a seat.
One of our current federal senators is Seven Fielding, of the christian political party called Family First. http://www.stevefielding.com.au/
That fool got his seat with only 1.8% of the primary vote. The remainder were on preferences. -

Re:To view the show
I also I believe one of his comments was "We are happy with the filter being to RC (Refused Classification) material For Now"
Which is a big part of the problem I have with the filter (amongst other things) is that it's open to scope creep. Pet peeve of the month will be used to help get ministers onside, especially at the moment to pass anything Labour need the help of the Independant ministers, ones like Family First Senator Steve Fielding, religious right wing nut job. -
Re:Bandwagon
I suspect the Australian Government was just desperate to get on a bandwagon while it was new, any bandwagon.
I'm convinced they were doing it to get this idiot on their side in the Senate.

Re:Good
This is totally to do with "Christian nutters", in particular one Senator Steve Fielding from Family First Party (i.e. the Christian Right). Other party site here. He holds the balance of power in the Senate and this is totally about getting his vote so as to enable the sitting government to get their legislation through. There are plenty of press [pdf] releases [pdf] on these sites to demonstrate their position and lobbying [pdf].
Big Media may be lobbying and pushing, but this is nothing to do with what is happening here in Australia with regards to the current push for filtering. -

Re:Child Porn Out of ControlThe agenda is this... Sitting ALP government needs Senator Fielding's vote in the senate to get legislation through. Senator Fielding's Family First Party (religious right -neo con types) holds the balance of power in the senate. Fielding wants a mandatory block on all porn in case some child stumbles onto it. The ALP see this as an easy win to get this guy on board. It's nothing to do with porn, illegal content or anything else. It is totally about securing this guys senate vote. You can read about his lobbying activities at www.stevefielding.com.au. This article [pdf 27k] pretty much covers it.
With choice quotes such as this"FAMILY FIRST has campaigned for the past two years for mandatory filtering at the ISP level, which a government report found was 'feasible' and which is the only way we can use filtering to help protect all children from pornography. "Mandatory filtering offers some protection to all children, even if their parents do not opt to take up a particular filtering scheme. The danger with the current proposals is that not all parents will take up the option and children will continue to be exposed to Internet pornography."
it would be very funny if not so serious.
