Re:The never ending story

Not to mention sniffing keystrokesIf someone can throw windows up on your X server, they can do worse than that. They can grab a screenshot (with xwd -root) or sniff keystrokes with xkey or xspy. Nothing shows up on your screen at all.
Anyone running with xhost access control is asking for trouble. If you're security conscious, tunnel your X session over ssh.

RE: Maybe we should think before we POST!
In short, 80% of the people who read Slashdot are freeloaders who won't even pay to read their favorite web site.
What makes Slashdot such a great webpage? Is the ability to (most of the time) read about geek news? Or is the ability to read and discuss a certain post with thousands of technical savvy people?
I believe it is the second one. If you remove those 80% (the freeloaders) would you have the diversity? You'd probably have a lot less trolls, but I think you would lose a lot of good with the bad.
I belong to a great LUG which does not charge for membership. If they did, I wouldn't put as much effort into my time there. I try to give just as much as I get. Do I feel that I do? No, not really. I love going and hearing about aspects of Linux that I know nothing about and learning something new.
To tie that to your post, I feel the same way about Slashdot. I could pay for a news website, and get spoonfeed mass media trash, or exert my brain here on Slashdot. These freeloaders might be the very ones who give great info in AskSlashdot, or mirror slashdotted webpages. Pay to read their favorite webpage? They do! They try to give back to the Slashdot community as best as they can.
This is not meant to be a flamebait, you will notice I am logged in even. You seem to think cash is the ONLY method of paying for something. You have a lot to learn about life.

RE: PBSKids.org
Thank you for making my point. The games on PbsKids and other pages require Shockwave, not Flash. Shockwave is Windows only (and maybe Mac) I have flash installed. I installed it when I installed NS 6.2. Now, I'm not Joe AverageUser, but I am a firm believer in the KISS mindset.
I have had several people at my LUG tell me that shockwave works fine under wine, but I have to ask. If all I want is my kids to be able to go to kids sites and play games, and I own a copy of windows anyway, why run an emulator? To me that would be like installing a PS2 emulator on your PC, when you have a working PS2 in the closet.

Re:Same as the "Dot-Bombs"
These folks are trying to turn Linux into a get-rich-quick scheme -- they are not part of the Linux community, and we should be careful not to describe them as such.
For the record, LG's former CEO, Mathew Porter is the chair of the St. Louis Linux Users Group. From what I've been told, he does this voluntarily and did it before he was associated with LG. I'm not sure if that makes matters better or worse. Since I run a network admin type business in St. Louis and I only recently began to attend my local LUG meetings, this affects me indirectly. Right now I'm just sitting back and waiting for all precincts to report before I decide how I feel about all of this.

Re:St. Louis LUG meeting is next Thursday!
Aparently you did not bother to look at the web site before commenting that it is out of date.
Well, let me see here. Upcoming Events lists the next event as October 19, 2000. Meeting Notes hasn't been updated since 10/2000 either. News has been neglected since 3/2000. Seems pretty lacking to me...

St. Louis LUG meeting is next Thursday!
I went to the last one and it was run by a guy from Linuxgruven. I don't remember his name, but he seemed like one of the higher-ups... It would be nice if their web page had this info on it, but it's so woefully out of date it isn't surprising. I think I'll have to go again to see what kind of spin he puts on this.
