Spectator Gaming, Multicast Style
Woil writes: "This interview at stomped.com is a discussion with project manager Erik Johnson about Valve's new multicast spectator technology. It'll be used first in Counter-Strike, then used in other games. The goal being to allow thousands of people to view top level matches from a separate proxy server." I'd like an aisle seat in the mezzanine, please. -
B.C. Officially Proposes Video Game Regulations
CitizenC writes: "The British Columbia Attorney General has now officially proposed legislation for a government sponsored classification system for video and PC games. Stomped spoke with a spokesperson with the Attorney General's office today for more infomation about the proposed regulations; read the report here." Basically, the proposed system (only proposed, note) would require video games be rated, much like movies are. Phwew! At least this is Canada! Nothing like this could ever affect us down here in the land of the free, home of -- Oh wait. Yes, it could. -
Neverwinter Nights Will Go On Win/Mac/Linux/Be
Faw writes "In an interview at Stomped Bioware's CEO Ray Muzyka mentioned that its next game Neverwinter Nights will be available for the PC, Mac, Linux and BeOS. I think this is the first time I have heard BeOS mentioned by a mayor game company. You can check the interview out as well." For those of you who don't know, Neverwinter is supposed to be the sequel to Baldur's Gate II [?] - and will have functions that allow DMs to make dungeons, and much better multiplayer support. Update: 12/29 06:53 PM by H :I've been corrected - NN doesn't have anything to do with the BG2 storyline. Must have been wishful thinking on my part. *grin* -

How The Grinch Captured The Flag
Deathlizard writes: "Sure. You heard about the Grinch Stealing Christmas, but you probably never heard about the Other Thing he Stole." This is very wrong. -

Apogee License Agreement Followup
Fireball sent us linkage to a quote (its way down there, can't link it directly) from BluesNews where Apogee's Scott Miller replies to my little tirade yesterday about the apogee license agreement. Basically it says that they would never do such a thing and shrugs it off as mere sensationalism. Of course I never figured Apogee would sue over this:my beef really isn't with Apogee as much as UCITA and what it makes theoretically legal. One can only hope that the courts strike it down, but only after many expensive legal battles I'm sure. -
Quake 3 Arena goes Gold
Geek Dash Boy writes "I noted on Stomped that Quake 3 Arena has gone gold. There's no official news item on the Q3A web site, but two of the folks working on the game updated their .plan files with the news. " Mmm...much fragging to be done. -

Denial of Service bounty hunters
lightPhoenix writes "Get this, John Carmack, god of id & quake 3 arena, is offering a bounty for exposure of game server exploits. Check it out. " It's down the page a bit-but it's there. That's a cool idea. -

Quickies Catch Up
Finally, a few minutes to clear out the submissions box. First up Dave Whitinger wrote in to tell us that Three Point's news has expanded in 3 lists (Press, Security and Software News). Han-Wen Nienhuys sent us a link to a project he has been working on called LilyPond. It is a sheet music layout program ala TeX. Looks pretty excellent (if you're into that sorta thing :) Bill Lynch wrote in to warn us that Dave "Zoid" Kirsch (Linux Quake Port Guy) would like some comments on support of linux libraries. Stomped has a link to Dave's .plan file. Albert Strasheim wrote in to plug a Linux t-shirt design contest. Winners get Amazon credit and free shirts, so you designers out there may want to hop over (wonder if I should submit DFTP:) Finally, Brian Vincent sent us a link to something from Graphon called GO-Global that accelerates X apps 300-1000%. AIX and Solaris already use it, but now there's a linux port. -
Heretic and Hexen Source Release
Matt Francis wrote in to tell us that the news on Redwood for June 28 has Id clearing a source code release for Heretic and Hexen (no sound- same thing as with doom). Hopefully we'll have a Linux port fairly soon. I dig those games. -
Quake2 Source
Following the trend of releasing software into the cold dark net, ID has apparently released the source code to Q2. Perhaps somebody can confirm if this is just the Linux version, the game.dll code, or just the QuakeC code that runs the show? You can read more at Redwood's 3D News or Disruptors Plan. Thanks to Michael Best who was the first of dozens to send this in. -
