Re:sad isn't it ?
Do people in this country really understand that the right wing religious nut-cases are out to make this country a theocracy ? American taliban indeed.
You're just pissed that Christians are trying to get in on the whole indoctrination business that the left-wing theocrats have been involved with for decades.
Last I checked, anthropogenic global warming propaganda films were still being shown in public schools under the guise of "science", as well as other extreme-left agitprop being shoved down the throats of impressionable youngsters.

Re:Running the numbers
I want a solution to carbon emissions too, but Cap and Trade isn't it in any of its current incarnations.

Re:The what?
What are carbon credits?
Details here.

Re:Smaller engines would be a good start.
Whether it's oil, food, bling or large-screen TVs, we are taught from childhood to buy, to use, to waste.
A strongly related summary on your subject can be found on The Story Of Stuff with Annie Leonard

Stop buying *stuff*
You might have *paid* less this way, but it certainly didn't *cost* less: http://storyofstuff.com/

The Story of Stuff
"From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever."

Re:Really?
I have always thought the use of the word green is overloaded and meaningless. What does green mean? Does it mean sustainable? Does it mean it is biodegradable? There is no standard for what these words mean and there isn't federal regulation on a standard that the companies must meet. The only way I think to cut down on energy and resource consumption is to consume less. See story of stuff and Wall-e for examples on our materialistic society. Unfortunately, the kind of self-restraint required to be thrifty and frugal is too much to ask for most.

Storyofstuff
May I invite people to look at the "Story of Stuff"? It's a very well done small movie about the waste economy...

Re:CDs are still readableI believe you're referring to Planned Obsolescence.
The most memorable time I saw it explained was when I watched this 20 minute video which will help you think about your effect on the planet:
-
It's not a free market
And it's not unregulated. The corporations that pay the lobbyists buy out the congressmen, and get laws passed that make them more powerful. They get to ignore the taxes everyone else pays, extract resources and manpower from third-world countries, and get away with almost anything. Because no one wants to know where their food, or anything else, comes from, and everyone wants to go shopping. See The Story of Stuff for more details. Given all that, ask yourself this. If they control the government now, what earthly good will giving the government more power do?

If Dvorak is against it then its good
Find out how YOU are part of the problem in 20 minutes:
http://www.storyofstuff.com/
Dvorak has such a wonderful track record and I actually feel a little bit better now he opposes OLPC.
Forget AIDS, people are starving! Forget cancer, people are starving! Forget USA schools, USA has starving people!
Dvorak: "3rd World" countries are not all in the same shape.
POLITICS are the real MAJOR problem to world hunger and too many people with the power to help are too clueless or 'evil'. Over population I'd maybe place a close second. Bankers/etc I'd place under politics since they are heavily entrenched in politics.
Don't forget the debt relief scams which have only made things worse for many nations; thanks to "banker/investor" types with political connections. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=FC37F4B5EC10D27C
If you don't consume or produce goods YOU have NO value! :-(
