I just signed up for allofmp3.comAnd I've spent a whopping $3.50 and got 4 full albums. It's legal, and like buying CD's doesn't screw the artists anyways. I'll go to shows and buy merchandise from them to pay them directly, where they get higher royalties.
There's an interesting thread here about it, scroll down to the one that starts "OK, here's the scoop on allofmp3.com" by ronross.
$.01/MB is about what I think is fair for online music, you like $.99/track great, I don't, I like $.05/track. If I thought artists deserve to live like rock stars I'd send them parts of every paycheck, or buy them coke, but I don't. If a musician makes more a year than I do for what is obviously less work then they can't complain.
The URL again where you can legally get tons of good quality music for $.01/MB is www.allofmp3.com
The English button is at the top left, FYI.Oh, and by the way, I welcome all flames/spam/etc to my personal email address kgb@submarinefund.com

Re:Is the patent being misunderstood? This IS the same thing that enlightenment's pager does.
It can make miniture pictures of all your apps and you can rearrange them, etc.
Checkout my desktop screenshot Note: this is my desktop on 2.21.03 almost exactly a year ago. And I've run E for at least 5 years. -
good read... but way offI'm an IT Manager for a small company. We have about 5-10 Mac's here. We're 99.5% Linux on the server, and about 35% Linux on the desktop. I have a G4.
Mac OS X and 9 are not easier to use than Linux/Windows. I think many people erroneously think Macintosh is "easier to use" since they just give up on doing much with it. For me, "easier to use" means I can decide a task on my own, let's call it a "goal", and easily achieve this "goal" with my computer. This is why I prefer Linux or FreeBSD. I can achieve any goal I want. If someone else hasn't achieved it already I can achieve it for everyone. I've used OS 9 and OS X and I can state that achieving my goals was in many instances not even possible.
Even with modest goals I couldn't achieve them. For example, I dont like the default "skin" and I want to change it.. I have NEVER seen someone do this, I've even posted this statement half a dozen times on /. and NOBODY has shown me a screen shot of their customized OS X. A good friend of mine went from Linux to OS X and I consider him very technical, he doesn't know how to do this. Can it be done? No, I don't think so. You can do it, great, reply with a howto, or email me kgb@submarinefund.com I'll try it out post haste on my G4. There are a couple dozen tasks like this that I've tried that I ended up with the answer "can't be done?"
Ignoring the horrible hardware monopoly and the extremely overpriced and underpowered machines Apple sells, I can't recommend OS X to anyone since I have a VERY LOW expectation that they will be able to achieve their goals with it.
Of course the UI customization is one area that just irks me about Apple zealots. It's such a slick GUI. That's greeaattt... I hope you like it since you're stuck with it... I do think this is why a lot of people choose Linux over Win/Mac OS for control of customizations, with Mac or Win you're helpless, or dependent on shelling out $$$ for often buggy "skin" software...
It wasn't the only thing that couldn't be done with the Mac I have, but it's the one that bugs me the most and that I remember, since I moved on, back to my Linux box that does whatever I tell it, like a good penguin should..wow, you CAN change your skin.. with aftermarket software
...It looks like it messed up most peoples OS X.. -
GOOD!! NO SPAM OR ANTI-SPAM LAWS!!!LEEP THE GOVERNMENT AND ITS OPPRESSIVE LAWS OFF THE INTERNET!
Spam doesn't bother me, I never see it unless I want to. I use popfile
If you dont use popfile or some other 99%+ spam filter then you are missing the boat
I dont want any more laws. We've already got enough bad ones, and they aren't helping me out.
Why techno-savvy Internet dwellers would WANT the Federal government OR the state governments making laws to govern ANY conduct on the Internet is beyond me!
Please people, take responsibility for your actions, don't buy the crap they're pusing, EVER!
That's the *only* thing that will ever stop SPAM.Wake up, America, we're loosing all our Freedoms. Politicians don't need any encouragement. Stop whining about spam.. Harvest my email it's kgb@submarinefund.com want it in a link HERE I ain't afraid a you and yer spam!

Re:What about documentationI think it's bare minimum to have good defaults documented, but let's look at computer games and their tutorials. I think it was Ghost Recon that actually told you your custom keys when telling you how to throw grenades, this blew me away. As someone who likes it how I likes it I usually take documentation with a grain of salt. But why couldn't all documentation just know what keys or mouse buttons you've bound to what.
To me, this means the problem isn't the trouble in creating accurate documentation, it's the lack of integration between the documentation and the programs customizations. My HP Laptop runs Linux

here's a hackish proposal i've made...you're not going to get bullet proof 24x7x365 for cheap, so first get over that idea. What you do want is the most people able to use your services the most amount of time.
This applies to web servers as that is my primary concern, but could be used for other types of services.
Setup 4-10 front end web servers and do round robin DNS between them for your site. The 4-10 all need to be colocated on differnet parts of the Internet, differnet providers all in data centers is ideal. These sites can be load balanced/failover protected for more $$$ of course. These are your initial contact points for a client, and they have either your home page or a forward to your currently active site(s). This speeds up your ability to rapidly change from your live datacenter for your real site to your backup datacenter. You run a monitoring / mangament program that's constantly communicating to these servers which is the current live site. (this part of the solution must be VERY secure otherwise you're going to reduce downtime) Very secure and also automated fast, with a safe default to fall back on, like a local static page. Now if your main site gets hit by a 500MB/sec tcp/udp flood on random ports from randomly spoofed ip addresses (like a certian site I manage did 2 months ago), you simply move the current live site to backup site 2, or 3, or 4. If the attack is directed at your dns then it has 4-10 times the total networks to flood and should receive substantialy more attention than were it to take down only 1. If you have 10 front end sites up and one gets taken down then 10% of the people asking for DNS are going to get the wrong site, at least until you update your DNS.
Anyways this is a proposal to a problem made in hind site, but it's one we're working on implementing.
best of luck to you! If there is some poor mans BGP out there I've love to hear about it.
in re-reading this I realize it doesn't seem directly applicable to the needs (cost, etc) but if you were to use 1-2U per colocation facility and less than 1MB/month each you could pay in the few hundreds per front end site, and keep your local facility....

I wonder if the russians would paint it for me.. or put a big window on the side.. maybe a sliding glass door...Please read the first line before you donate, you will NOT get a free ride just because you donated $100,000.
