Suntrust Bank Phishing its Own Customers?
I recently opened a Suntrust checking account, and soon got a welcome E-mail with the expected "SunTrust will never send unsolicited emails asking clients to provide, update, or verify personal or account information, such as passwords, Social Security Numbers, PINs, credit or Check Card numbers, or other confidential information"
Later that same day, I get another E-mail from "Suntrust Credentials Delivery", asking me to go to https://www.suntrust.com/completeenrollment and enter the security code provided in the E-mail, my COMPLETE Social Security number, and to choose a User ID and Password, which had already been established elsewhere at this point.
I figure this has GOT to be phishing with a real-time connection to Suntrust's account database, or an attempt by Suntrust to determine if I'm an idiot.
I've gotten the E-mail several times since, and even snail mail on Suntrust stationary, imploring me to complete my enrollment. I haven't, and my online access is still working fine. I can't wait for them to shut it down so I can walk into their branch and show them that they are asking me to provide the very info they swore they would never ask me for by E-mail. -
Re:I just lie to my bank
I recently exorcised my aunt's WinXP box of the usual demons (spyware, malware, etc.) and after doing so I installed Firefox for her. Like yourself, the only website that has given her grief is http://www.suntrust.com/ as she also uses it to pay bills. I wrote them an e-mail about their lack of support for browsers other than IE. They never reponded. I find it interesting that you mention that their website works fine with Firefox with some user agent spoofing. Perhaps I should pay my aunt a visit to "install an update" on her computer. Although, I also cringe at the thought Firefox masquerading as IE and the negative effect it has on browser statistics.

Re:suntrust is somewhere in the middle toward sain
My boss closed his Suntrust account because servie at the branches was horrid.
What gets me about suntrust is this message.
From the page:
Your browser is not compatible with www.suntrust.com at this time.
If you are using Netscape 6.x, Netscape has chosen to alter their communication standards resulting in this incompatibility. In the interim, we recommend you use one of the following browsers:
* Netscape (4.08 - 4.77)
* Internet Explorer (4.0 or higher)
* AOL (4.0 or higher)
If you are using AOL or Internet Explorer 4.5 on a Macintosh, we recommend you download and utilize Internet Explorer 5.0 to optimize your experience on our site.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. If you have any questions, please contact us at 1-800-382-3232.
What exactly has netscape altered that messes with http? Nothing that I can think of. Sounds like an excuse to do shitty work. Probably how they explained it to the people who commisioned the webwork anyway. -
suntrust is somewhere in the middle toward saint..
my bank, suntrust, is somewhere in between. it leans toward the saintly side because the entire actual online banking system works perfectly on mozilla, but their website itself gives a message saying that browsers of the netscape 6/mozilla family aren't supported (netscape 4.* is supported). i'm not sure why this is.
it seems to me that it would be easier to make the company's website compatible across the board than it would to do the same for the complex system for managing accounts. oh well. i'm a satisfied with it anyway. -

Standards, schmandards. What matters is customers
Standards compliance is an excellant tool for measuring compatibility, etc., but what really matters about a commercial website isn't whether it's standards-compliant but whether the desired customers can make use of it. My bank has recently upgraded their net-banking site such that Opera works perfectly with it, where it hadn't just a few months ago. Yet another reason not to use Netscape Navigator! (I never use MS-Internet Explorer, it's too untrustworthy).
