Re:Flash format is openIf it's so open, than why don't we see many opensource editors, viewers and translators for it? Well, there is gplflash, but it's very outdate and doesn't display 99% of flash content that is published around.
Something is very fishy about flashy.

What's wrong with the GPL version:
-
Audacity lacks filters

A good opensource sollution for webbrowsing......would be to use the Dillo webbrowser as soon as it is combined with GNU wget to download files(which it doesn't yet do), with flasplayer to play Macromedia Shockwave flash scripts, and MPlayer to play the vast assortment of MultiMedia formats. How many people's Netscape browser uses "xanim" and the win32 dll's to view the various Microsoft multimedia video stream formats and also uses the commercial "mpegtv" for some good MPEG ability?
(...raises hand)
Well the "Dillo" webbrowser launches faster than a gassy turd pulled by gravity! It launches fast! It's the best X11/GTK+ Webbrowser for slow computers! It can't download other files intelligently yet, but I gave the author a hint to use a way of downloading files like the Ximian GNOME's native webbrowser, with an external program called "gtransfter" or "gtop"... I can't remember the name. So, that if for some reason the browser were to crash, the files being downloaded would not be stopped. So far, Netscape and Microsoft Internet Expl(or|oit)er will take file downloads with them as they crash. I remember I once tried downloading the LinuxQuake3 demo from ftp.cdrom.com about 7 months ago and Netscape crashed in the middle of the download! AIEEEEEEEEE! It was a big loss, so I did it again, taking about 90 minutes to download, and I got it perfectly and the next webpage I visited caused Netscape to crash. Lucky I got it in time, I guess...

Mozilla and flash pluginMozilla doesn't seem to want to recognize the plugin
Odd. It Just Worked for me. I've been using the flash plugin in Mozilla since 0.8 or so without too many problems. In fact, the only major problem I have it that it hangs the browser if another application has
/dev/dsp open and a flash movie tries to do sound until the first app is closed. Oh, and of course it doesn't work on my non-x86 Linux boxen (currently Sparc and Alpha). But I don't really miss flash enough to bothered to try Olivier Debon's free flash plugin. As others have pointed out, there are options for flash authoring under Unix, but I can't say I've needed to use them (but then I've never yet come across a web site that benefited from having flash). -
Some hope on the horizon
I have found two Flash content generation products -- SWIFT and Ming.
From swift-tools.com :
Swift-Generator is a Dynamic Flash? Content generator. It aims at dynamically replacing texts, fonts, sounds, images and movie clips in either a Template file or a standard Flash? file. It can also dynamically change action parameters in either frames or buttons.
This allows Webmasters to create dynamic content such as stock-exchange values, sport scoring, weather values, news tickers and the like. Swift-Generator only requires an authoring tool like Macromedia® Flash? 4 or 5. Once a Flash? file is created, Swift-Generator is able to handle it.
This will only work for filling in templates, but its definitely a start... perhaps SWIFT-tools will release a full editor in the future?
From opaque.net:
Ming is a c library for generating SWF ("Flash") format movies, plus a set of wrappers for using the library from c++ and popular scripting languages like PHP, Python, and Ruby.
Ming is just a library, but perhaps somebody will develop a graphical front-end for it in the future. -
yes, there is a GPLd flash plugin
it's right here on swift-tools.com (SWF-->SWiFt). For the link wary that's http://www.swift-tools.com/Flash/ . The site has all sorts of other cool SWF-based tools too (like an analog of Generator that doesn't cost 20 bajillion dollars per CPU, I think it's free if you display the little link button, US$100 otherwise).

re: Dope DragonIt sounds like you want something like SMIL http://www.ruleweb.com/dhtml/smil.html
SMIL stands for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. It is an XML based language. Its simple tag structure resembles HTML, but it allows you to create presentations which are composed of different media types including Real Video, Real Audio, RealText (new), RealPix (new), AVI, WAV, AU and other media types. It includes timeline features as well as wipes and animation.
There are also things that help with the generation of FLASH content like Swift Generator, which I have used and is quite fast, or various Perl modules for building them... maybe someone has put these together to create something like what you want? -
Not new
This is known for a very long time, all Flash developers, I mean the guys who hack the swf format, knew this. It's pretty easy to make your Windoze machine crash even get a BSOD on NT.
Buffer overflows have not been exploited for the moment, needless to say what OS will be the big victim, the Linux users may worry though.
Developing Open source player is again the answer, check out this project and contribute! Even for Windows.
Anyway, Flash rocks. -
Flashdot?
I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Flashdot, a demo at Swift-Tools' site. According to the blurb, it "...displays headlines of Slashdot (famous techies news site). It uses Perl, LoadMovie, image replacements, dynamic GotoLabel,
..."The Slashdot of the future? I hope not.

PHP has had Flash for quite some timeThis really isn't Flash, but
.swf files. Macromedia opened the .swf file format quite some time ago.http://www.php.net/manual/ref.swf.php.
also check out swift-generator - also perl based. Quite possibly the coolest
.swf based tool of all.

microsoft on linux
jippee! go bill!! just what we need. is there any open source initiative for video streaming? i guess mp3 encoding is somewhat available in opensource. Its good to see swift generator is available as a cost effective solution for flash, but i havent seen anything that i could use for video streaming

Re:Generator for Non Windows???
There is an alternative to Macromedia Generator. And it's free: Swift Generator
