POVRay Short Code Contest Results In
PateraSilk writes "The Results for the POVRay Short Code Contest are available here. This contest looks for the best images to be generated in POVRay with the smallest amount of code--in this case, under 256 bytes. Definitely 'less is more'." -
POVRay Short Code Contest, Round 3
An anonymous reader submits "The aim of the POVRay Short Code Contest SCC3 is to create an artistic work using POVRay (a free raytracing program) using only a limited number of bytes. The last round had an upper limit of 500 bytes and this round increased the challenge by reducing the maximum number of bytes to 256 (about 2 average length English sentences). This round saw some exceptional entries, an example of extreme image compression since these images can be created at any arbitrary resolution! The competition is now closed to entries and voting, which is open to the public, has started. The 51 entries can be viewed here. POVRay can be downloaded free from povray.org/." -
Google Traffic Takes Down Web Site
bazonkers writes "Searchenginelowdown.com reports that it appears that the Google logo yesterday (honoring Gaston Julia) linked to the Google image search results for the words 'julia fractal'. The resulting traffic generated from clicking on that 'featured logo' incapacitated the servers of the top-listed images, hosted at an Australian university. This more than inconvenienced the owners of that site, who had to move pages and ended up displaying this page instead." -
Beer-Coated CDs are Optical Biocomputers
commodoresloat writes "A DJ and scientist in Melbourne whose research is in the area of communication through biological cells, serendipitously created an 'optical biocomputer' when he spilled beer on his CDs and left them over night. The resulting fungus that formed distorted the sound of the CDs in interesting and meaningful ways. Here's some of his research, and some media samples which include mp3s of the distorted music." Yes, the term biocomputer is used in the loosest sense. -

Best Fonts for Linux Browsers?
BladeMelbourne asks: "As a web developer with a healthy love of Linux, I was wondering which fonts look great in Linux web browsers (particularly Mozilla/Netscape). Using 'Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif' just doesn't look nice. Do different distro's have different fonts? Which fonts resemble Arial/Helvetica? Which fonts are anti-aliased? Speaking of anti-aliased, does anyone know concisely how to get AA fonts with Mozilla on RedHat 8.0? I have my TTFs working, but don't seem to display correcly and look rather ugly on my display." -

Psarchasm wrote in to note that NetStat has recieved a makeover, no MCI, but 15 other spots are generating good net traffic reports. Mike Evans wrote in to send us a link to RFC2441, A tribute to Jon Postel by Danny Cohen. An anonymous reader wrote in to send us an article where you can read about a biochemist who is now in legal trouble for distributing genetically altered seeds that grow Oranges containing THC. He designed them because cops confiscated his car 15 years earlier. Bill Bumgarner wrote in to say that A Sherlock Plugin for searching Slashdot is now available. Bob McCown sent us a link to an interesting Pen Based Computer. Another anonymous reader wrote in to send us a link to an excellent Linux Introduction Series over at Avault on Penguin Games. Nick sent in an oldy but goodie, a link to the Unix Haters Handbook. It comes with its own Unix Barf Bag. -
