I'd have to agree with you, I don't see what advantage using linux over say Cisco IOS would be. Unless he is trying to run linux for the sake of running linux. However this company http://www.synergymicro.com/ Produces a variety of single board computers that address a diverse range of high-end computing needs. Re:What it is and why Linux won't run on it.I'll also point you to this page on the manufacturer's web site which specifically says that they support Linux on their boards. The page has a pretty cool "industrial penguin" logo...
Admittedly, they do not claim that SMP or real-time features will be ready until Q3 2000, but that's only a few months away.

More details about the board to be displayed can be found at Synergy's product page. Alas, no prices are posted. They already produce a number of PPC-based boards, though, and claim Linux support for many. I want a VGMD for my Miata.
