Re:No such thing
No Javascript (Impossible, otherwise you will see the ads burned into the content of the website, which is actually worse, because it's hard to be context-aware this way, do you really want to see ads for condoms on childrens comics?)
Then be aware of the context of the page on which the advertisement appears, and be unaware of the viewer's context.
Nobody buys directly from content publishers because campaigns have set dates to run
Then publishers ought to introduce tools to let an advertiser choose the start and end of each campaign, so that an advertiser can buy a particular share of a particular ad unit on a "set it and forget it" basis.
No interstitials (These are really only meant for linear content, eg you visit a site, and on the third page or so, you see this ad. It's not meant to be the first thing you see because it sends the user away from the publisher.)

The concept of "legitimate pop-ups"
The Firefox pop-up blocker allows pop-ups only in response to a discrete user action, such as a click or keypress. This was intended to allow for pop-ups inside legit web applications, especially in the era before DHTML pop-overs became standard. But it ended up abused, as ad networks would just wait for any random click on the page before doing the same old pop-ups. And pop-overs have since also been heavily abused to nag viewers, usually into subscribing to a mailing list.

Re:Tab closed; didn't read
I could not read the featured article because after I got a couple paragraphs down in the text, an automatically playing HTML5 video ad with sound that the site would not let me skip until after watching and listening to all 15 seconds of the 15-second ad caused me to reflexively press Ctrl+R. When the page reloaded, a full-window still ad appeared with a mailing list subscription nag on top of it.
I do this all the time! I'm not alone!!

Pop-ups nagging the user to join a mailing list
No more nagging popups.
How did you accomplish that? I run Firefox in Xubuntu and still get nagging pop-ups. And a lot of these are served from the same domain as the page, so hosts won't block them.

Re:Tony
I read some, not all.
I think your problem is, that you
... ... fed the trolls. You play the "its crap" "no it's not crap, because ..." "your argument is invalid, because" "but my other argument is valid" game with them. ... You brought it to personal stuff and/or replied to personal stuff. This means, you let the flamewar about an article get to a flamewar about if your achievements are great enough. You compiled a rather big post with your achievments. First people can try to dissect it, what are great achievements and which are not so great and second it seems like you're trying to profile yourself. I guess it's just self defense, but then you're argumenting about your worth with a not very sensible audience.
In my short post, i did not reply that sensible myself, and this are the reasons. I felt provoced by your post, which i read as "my article MUST be great, because of [my achievements here and there]".
Now i am just trying to clarify a bit, why you're getting more and more hate instead of "hey, we value you because now we see you did much great stuff". Things do not work this way, when the discussion reached that level.I do not see, what's inside the popup, maybe because of adblock. But the usual stuff in such popups do not belong there. Its "like us on facebook", "subscribe our newsletter", "disable your adblocker", "look at other stuff of our website".
All things, you might think as reasonable. AFTER reading your article. Why should i like your site, before i read any word? Why should i subscribe the newsletter not knowing if your articles are worth it? I am using an adblocker on purpose, some nagging will not change it that easy. Not before i see, your site is worth it. And if i want to see other articles, i will find them.
