you're a libertarian, aren't you?Remember when Bill Bennett, professional moralizer, was outed as a compulsive gambler? Libertarians were the first ones to rush to his defense, despite the fact that Bennett's entire career has been based around telling other people how to live their lives, the compete antithesis to Libertarian ideals.
The point they missed out on is that is perfectly fine to have sympathy for Limbaugh and Bennett the compulsive addicts, but Limbaugh and Bennett the gigantic hypocrites deserve nothing but scorn and ridicule. And yes, Limbaugh is the epitome of hypocrisy on drugs:"Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."
You claim he is wrong 100% of the time.

"What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use, too many whites are getting away with drug sales, too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too."
-- Rush Limbaugh. October 5, 1995 show transcript.

"It's kind of like sentencing. A lot of people say that we have a heavy sentence for this crime and a light sentence for another crime, and what we ought to do is reduce the heavy sentence so it's more in line with the other. Wrong. In most cases we ought to increase the light sentence and make it compatible with the heavy sentence, and be serious about punishment because we are becoming too tolerant as a society, folks, especially of crime, in too many parts of the country."

No I didn't. I said "anytime he opens his mouth he is very likely to be 100% full of crap."
You think Republican = bad
There you go: just like Rush, you make stuff up.
Democrats routinely do virtually everything the Republicans do.
No, they don't. There are some corporate tools that need to be primaried out of office, like Feinstein and Rockefeller. Take FISA for example: both those Democrats along with a dozen others voted for telecom immunity, but 31 Democrats voted against it. Whereas ALL the Republicans that showed up voted for it.
I don't think Al Franken is wrong 100% of the time (I actually lean closer to Al than Rush, but that's beside the point).
That's the difference between liberals and conservatives: after decades of vicious attacks on them, liberals by and large make sure their shit is on point. Whereas conservatives invariably toe the ideological line, facts be damned. Case in point: single payer health care. It costs far less money and provides better care than that which private insurance provides, period. Yet they continue to scream "socialism" and fight it. -

And ClearChannel is the Loser
What's amusing about all this is that ClearChannel has been seen as heavily pro-Bush. But it seems that Bush's "activist FCC" may not be good for business, as they reported a huge one-time loss. That same article reports that their radio business is stagnating. Frank Rich said it best: Basically, FCC regulation is on the upswing, but you get between the people and their "Desperate Housewives" at the risk of your business model.

SS can also mean Secret Service.

Re:baffling, can anyone explain?
The beauty of 'the system'. Its wonderful how to corporate America has turned the radio into the worthless crap that it is. Although it is 'ours' LPFM is the closest thing the average person can get to having a station and even that requires you be a 501.3c, have at least a couple thousand dollars for a certified broadcasting studio, AND have applied in the extremly tiny window provided for us a few years back. And really who applied for this option when it happened? Fucking religious groups all across the country who already have a very tiny portion of the spectrum to their incoherent babbling. Meanwhile, ClearChannel owns the rest. Thanks guys. A serious movement needs to occur to take back our airwaves, topple the power wielded over us by the FCC.
This is also why media conglomerates want to make cable and satellite your primary avenue for enterntainment. Since they own those avenues. Own and control. I will never buy a satellite dish and i will never buy cable. I dont need them and i dont want them. KILL YOUR TV. Next step after this, the internet... -
Kissing butt in Texas
Here in Dallas, we've lost our last Hard Rock station, Clear Channel's 97.1 The Eagle. They turned it into Sunny 97.1, playing a fully automated mix of 70s and 80s. My 13-year-old daughter and all her friends were devastated, but I told her it's really pretty simple.
It's George W's fault.
Clear Channel vice-head-honcho Tom Hicks made Dubya a rich man indeed when he bought the Texas Rangers from Bush's ownership group. That freed up Bush to run for Governor, and the rest, as they say, is history (though he was a decent governor, as they go). Short story: Hicks and Bush are buds.
Now, you have Janet Jackson's Right Breast suddenly stirring up the bible-thumpers (the ones that give us Christians a bad image). Fired up, they went after an easy target -- the shock jocks that Clear Channel and others put on the air to cover up the fact that their corporate music sucks.
Bush calls Hicks with a proposal: act like they're sorry, pay a little fine, shut down some jocks and stations, so that the bible thumpers will feel like they've won. Bush gets his base energized, and Hicks gets buddy Bush re-elected.
And for the icing on the cake, Clear Channel turns off the last rock station in conservative Dallas.
They'd been letting it rot in the ratings for years (details here), so they had an excuse. So maybe my tinfoil hat is on too tight. But if they'd supported the music, KEGL would have *had* ratings... and top 15 in the Dallas market still isn't anything to sneeze at.
Bottom line: Republican politics killed Rock in Dallas. The Eagle joins Q102 and The Zoo in radio oblivion. -
YES IT IS ClearChannel!!!!
Clearchannel owns 1,200 stations, if you think they don't control the NAB, and a large portion of the broadcast media in the United States, then you are living fantasies.
They also own almost all (literally) of the concert venues, and even the ticket agencies. They use tactics that would make Bill Gates proud, and they are in bed with theGeorge W. Bush administration.
When I have more than 5 minutes to spend digging up links, maybe I'll post a proper synopsis of what this evil empire is really about, although it'll be wasted at slashdot, and its probably been done better by somebody else anyway.
Lets vote this maniac out of office. If we don't then you can expect to see events unfold in a similar fashion to what transpired in Europe a little over 60 years ago, with the key difference being that weapons new exist which could destroy all life on this planet.
GWBush is a madman, and he has to go!!! -
Re:Worried about memory holes?
Ok, since this was initially modded OT (but seems to be moving up), I'll explain my reasoning:
The story is about a news site that has pulled an article that might embarrass the current president, so I provide links to "alternative" "left-wing" news sites that often have their own copy of the story because they've already posted it, or they have an editorial about the article in question. I remember this Bush Sr. article being fairly heavily discussed when it was first noticed well before the war started. If you look at the histories of some of those sites, you'll find it.
And while I'm at it, I forgot two of the most relevant:
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (more serious)
Take Back the Media (more rabid) -
Not unbiased, not mainstream either.

Re:Where do you draw the line? What if you think that overall a company is good, and has done a lot of good in general, and happen to disagree with them over one policy, which isn't, in any case, as bad as the hysterics make it out to be?
As I posted further down, I think Amazon.com have been very innovative and inventive, and they deserve credit for that. They're not evil, and they appear to be working within a broken system on the patents issue, if you feel that the patents are unjustified in the first place.
It would be a long time before President Bezos suspends the bill of rights, creates reeducation camps across the country, and plasters the entire nation in Amazon A-Z swooshes that I'd boycott them. Hell, advertising on the Rush Limbaugh show would be enough. But this issue, a patent for something they invented in the context of an industry they pioneered, that the incumbent rival in the closest industry would have prevented from starting up had it been less short-sighted?
I think Amazon deserves their patents. What they do with them is another matter. But they've created an industry, they ought to profit from it.

Dear Fascist (Read "Bush") Sympathizer:
Thank you for your prompt reply. You note
above "the nuke Sadam is going to drop on your house". Would you please cite a reference as evidence for this assertion.
Here's my evidence of Bush's fascist leanings:
