    In the old days (1970s, 1980s and maybe 90s), HP -- that's the real pre-Carly HP -- had a publication called HP Digest. This had a column showing hough tough HP kit was. People would send in stories/photos about how they had backed a truck over their spectum analyzer or an oscilloscope getting burnt in a fire etc etc. Tough kit!

    For modern kit, I'd put some money on The TDS Recon http://www.tdsway.com/products/recon. I have seen one thrown off a building and they keep one in a fish tank in their lobby http://www.tdsway.com/products/nomad/fish_tank2

    The TDS website has a "Fish Tank cam" just showing that these PDAs are ready for under-water activities like scuba-driving and/or fcsking in a lagoon. With or without a partner.

    They already use it. Here's one of them. The TDS Recon has been around a while and while the one I link to isn't the militarized version, this one is only different in color(army has green ones) and any possible top secret add ons.

    Just such a beast was mentioned here on slashdot recently. It's a WinCE device with two CF slots, so it's perfectly capable of 802.11x. Read a review here or order one here.

    It's quite pricy, but if you think you can rent them out (especially at pro-sporting event level prices!), I suspect you can recover the cost pretty neatly. Can you tell us which stadium it is?

    With the right software, something like this could make a really nice alternative to other high-priced, 'ruggedized' hand-helds.

    Instead of any of these USD1500+ devices, I'm using an Audiovox Maestro PDA with a ruggedized case. The PDA cost USD140 on eBay and the case cost ~USD100 with shipping. The biggest cost was the crappy software.
