Microsoft Plans More Japan-Specific Xbox 2 Games
Thanks to Bloomberg.com for its report discussing Microsoft's plans to recruit local developers to help the Xbox 2 succeed in Japan. Norman Cheuk of Microsoft Japan indicates: "A lot of what we're doing today is to position ourselves. We're looking at the future generations where we'd like to be successful", though efforts to encourage more Japanese Xbox exclusives (following on from Tecmo's Dead Or Alive 3/Dead Or Alive Ultimate) have recently been stymied: "Capcom Co., Japan's third-biggest game maker, has turned down offers from Microsoft in recent months to help pay distribution and development costs in return for more exclusive games for the Xbox, said Kazuhiko Abe, head of Capcom's corporate strategy division, without giving details." Abe also stated Capcom "isn't interested in developing more" Xbox titles, simply saying: "There are no plans... It's just not profitable enough." -

Are Game Magazines Turning Into Men's Magazines?
KaiEl writes "I was skimming through the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (April 2004) the other day when I began to notice a recurring theme: pictures of scantily clad women, both virtual and real, kept popping up. Usually it's not surprising to find one or two skimpy outfits in an issue, but this one seemed crawling with them. I decided to chronicle a list of the semi-nudity in a post on my weblog. What does this surplus of sexy pictures say about the direction of the videogame industry? Is it a reaction to the success of 'male' magazines like Maxim and FHM? Is it a reflection of the video game industry's seeming fascination with the barely clothed female form (see: Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball)? Or am I just a prude who's getting worked up over nothing?" -
New Xbox, PS2 Budget Titles Announced
Thanks to GameSpot for their list of the newest set of budget Xbox titles "in the second wave of Platinum Hits". The titles that already have, or shortly will retail for $19.99 include Dead Or Alive 3, Hitman 2, and Medal Of Honor: Frontline. There also seem to be some new additions to the extensive PlayStation 2 Greatest Hits line-up due, although it's difficult to officially verify, with Final Fantasy X (currently), plus Sly Cooper, Ratchet And Clank, and Kingdom Hearts (in the next couple of months) all apparently dropping to $19.99. -
DoA Volleyball - Live The Bikini Dream
Thanks to several readers for pointing to a Gamers.com article discussing the sale of limited-edition bikinis based on the Team Ninja-designed virtual costumes from Dead Or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball for Xbox. The article says that "..the Echo (Lei-Fang's schoolgirl suit) has been left out, leaving Tina's Asterope, Kasumi's Amaterasu, Ayane's Lamina, and Hitomi's Cepheus. Each can be had for the modest price of $149.99, which we deem quite reasonable for such coveted items." And if you're having trouble visualizing these 'unique' products, the Tecmo USA store has pictures of the available-for-pre-order bikinis (a tipster says "..try changing the JPG image numbers for some added perspective.") -
