Re:mini-PCIe Tracker
I hadn't heard of them before but the only 3G + GPS solutions using Python I've heard of are Telit modules, doing a search for Telit products it's probably something like the following:

Re:Very relevent for small target embedded stuff.
You still have Python-capable processors for embedded systems if you can't afford to learn C.
There you go. This. C is for the clever people. We leave the rest of the mediocre languages to the masses.

Re:Very relevent for small target embedded stuff.
Depends mostly on compiler and toolchain availability on those platforms. You still have Python-capable processors for embedded systems if you can't afford to learn C.
FWIW, I've been struggling with LPC4300 series processors. The open source toolchain is just so bad that your CPU hard faults on first attempted function call (most likely due to incorrect memory maps).

diy "phone"
I've thought about making a custom "phone" in the past with GSM modules, but haven't had the time. Telit sells modules that have a builtin Python interpreter. Might make a fun hobby project. Sparkfun used to carry these modules... http://www.telit.com/en/products.php?p_ac=show&p=7/

Re:Chicken::egg.There are already chipsets that use multiple positioning constellations simultaneously. It won't be long until consumer gear has this as a standard feature.
The chips can receive some or all of GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, COMPASS (AKA China's Beidou or Big Dipper), QZSS (Japan) and SBAS augmentation services.
For hardware hackers, companies have put the chips into easier to use modules. Two examples are the Telit Jupiter SL869 and the uBlox NEO-7, which are even footprint compatible with each other.

Transferable skills..?
If you're using any device that communicates over a serial port (Telit GT864-PY for example), you're going to use parts of the Hayes Command Set. Not necessarily all of it, but it's certainly not obsolete.
And as for 'Changing the battery of a Sega Dreamcast VMU'... isn't that just a case of unscrewing the cover, removing the battery, and popping in a replacement? The Dreamcast VMU might itself be obsolete, but I just went through that exact procedure yesterday while changing the battery in my car's central locking remote.
I'm not taking the list too seriously though, seeing as 'sex' is on it...
