Tetris To Be Made Into a Live Action Film
SchrodingerZ writes: Threshold Entertainment has announced that it will be producing a live action film based on the Russian stacking game Tetris. Designed in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris has sold over 35 million copies worldwide. Threshold CEO Larry Kasanoff promises "a very big, epic sci-fi movie," explaining, "this isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes." Kasanoff is known for his work with the video game films Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, collectively grossing $105 million in revenue. The studio is planning "a story behind Tetris which makes it a much more imaginative thing," though no directors nor cast have been connected to the film. Threshold Entertainment teased the idea, saying "What you [will] see in Tetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance." -

Midway Sues Ericsson Over Defender 'Tribute'
An anonymous reader writes "Redkeyreddoor is relaying a story, via the Wall Street Journal, that Midway has sued Ericsson for distributing a completely unlicensed version of Defender on its T68 cellphone. The mobile game in question seems to be 'Game', which does bear a remarkable similarity to Defender (there's a screenshot at this Japanese cellphone review page). Ericsson has apparently removed 'Game' (and a version of Tetris, ingeniously called 'Tetris') from later versions of the T68." -
Is Tetris "copyrighted"?
Odds writes "I wrote a shareware Tetris game five years ago. I got an e-mail today from another Tetris author, who received a menacing e-mail from some company called Blue Planet Software. These guys have some deal with Alexey Pajitnov, and claim to have a "copyright" on the Tetris concept. There's a lot of FUD on their web site, talking about "cutthroat pirates" making knockoff games. Now, I'm no legal expert, but last I checked copyright didn't protect ideas. Is this another case of clobbering the little programmers? " -
