Re:Want old-school? Here you go:
There was an old BBS door, Caribbean Contraband, that had a similar bug. You could buy and sell negative quantities of the various items you were running around. Since the buy and sell code only checked maximums, you could "sell" a negative quantity to buy more than your plane could hold. (I don't remember if you could "buy" a negative quantity to sell more merchandise than you were carrying.) All I do know is that I ran up a bank account of around $2B before I quit.
Needless to say, the BBS operator got wise to these shenanigans pretty quick, and I only did it once.
:-) He was a good sport about it and thought it was pretty clever.Whaddaya know, a link to it! I wonder if the "overflow" bug mentioned in the WHATSNEW.TXT is the same bug? They don't mention the bug I found by name at least. It may still exist in there, who knows?

It's 1984 Again!COMPUTE!'S Gazette, a magazine dealing with the Commodore 64, published a program called "Campaign Manager" in their August 1984 (Issue 14, Vol 2, No 8) edition.
And for you youngsters in the crowd the word "published" can be taken literally there. There were pages of machine code you had to enter into an editor called "MLX" to compile and run the game.
I remember this because I had a broken leg in 1984 and had to spend most of the summer laid out on the couch. I typed that whole game in and played it incessently.
You can get a
.D64 file of the game (along with the other software in that particular issue of the magazine) for use in C64 emulators here. -
Re:Wow, this brings back memories
Since so many sysops around (havnt used that term in years)
Check out these links.

and
http://bbslist.textfiles.com
Don't forget to google for Similar pages, if you migrated to PC after the Apple/C64 classic modem BBS'ing, you can find all the Ansi Door games of the past. BTW, you can run door games under linux with dosemu and Linux BBS software for those broadband Tradewar junkies.

Anyone remember RIP from the BBS days?
I remember that RIP was the first vector graphics interpreter for dial-up BBS' in the late 80s/early 90s. It required a special client but it made the BBS experience that much nicer.
It makes me wonder: why it took so long for it to be incorporated in some fashion as a web standard? -
Re:Good news
loads of bbs stuff here.

For Sysops...
For those of you still running BBSes.. let's not forget the bbs archive where you can find every utility, door game, and bbs package ever created (well, almost).
Also there is the BBSnet IRC chat server where a lot of BBS authors and sysops, including the current maintainer of LORD, frequently hang out.

Re:My comment..
Sigh. I miss the old days of playing Galactic Warzone. It wasn't widely played, but it blew Tradewars away completely.
Does anyone remember a game called Omega as well? It was like Ultima with ASCII graphics, where you could traverse the actual world, not just the dungeons. One of the coolest (and most frustrating features) was that after the sun went down, the ghosts of the monsters you killed came looking for you again.
Now THAT was gameplay :) -
Legend of the Red Dragon, BBS Links - repost
Lord's still around.. http://lord.lordlegacy.org
.. Being ported to Win32 w/ door32, OS/2, and Linux. (some people might ask "why os2?" its easy for me to do win32 and os2 versions. change compile target, recompile, poof. done.) A telnet server and web version are both planned as well.
Seth Able, the original author, got burned out on bbs coding.. Sold all of his software (Lord, Lord2, Teos, and TLord) to Metropolis.. They had the games for a good 2 years before allowing me to work on them.. This next June will make 3 years that Ive been working on them.
Want to see what the games like nowadays? telnet://bbs.lordlegacy.org .. Make sure to use a good telnet client, such as Mtelnet..
BBS's, while not as popular as they once were, are still going pretty strong. With telnet helping out, theyre making a good come back. Check out Synchronet, EleBBS, or Mystic for good telnet softwares.
Maybe looking for bbs chat? Grab an IRC client and go to irc.lordlegacy.org or irc.thebbs.org in #bbs
Looking for a list of boards? TheDirectory has a telnet list and a dialup list.
Looking for the bbs files? TheBBS's Archives is huge.

BBS Software
I'm too lazy to read through all the comments to find out if this has been posted yet, but hit up http://archives.thebbs.org if you're looking for old BBS software. That and what seemed like endless pages of Tradewars 2002 add-ons.
Thank god for the internet. :) -
BBS Voting booths
Back before the Internet (well, not really _before_) there were BBS systems that you would call directly. They ran software like PC Board, Wildcat, Spitfire, etc that supported "doors." Many had voting booths, questionairs, polls, whatever you want to call them. This all happened in the late 80's to the mid 90's. I'm sure you can find prior art in the BBS Archives. The Voting booths section would be a good start.
