Spain's Crackdown on Catalonia Includes Internet Censorship (internetsociety.org)
Spain's autonomous Catalonia region wants to hold a referendum on independence next weekend. Spain's Constitutional Court insists that that vote is illegal, and has taken control of Catalonia's police force to try to stop the vote. They're deploying thousands of additional police officers and have seized nearly 10 million ballots. And now the Internet Society has gotten involved, according to an announcement shared by Slashdot reader valinor89: Measures restricting free and open access to the Internet related to the independence referendum have been reported in Catalonia. There have been reports that major telecom operators have been asked to monitor and block traffic to political websites, and following a court order, law enforcement has raided the offices of the .cat registry in Barcelona, examining a computer and arresting staff.
We are concerned by reports that this court order would require a top-level domain (TLD) operator such as .cat to begin to block "all domains that may contain any kind of information about the referendum." -
Spurious Drones Buzzing Around Spanish Royal Palace
jones_supa writes: A series of unmanned aircraft have been spotted in the restricted airspace above the residence of Spain's royal family. Staff at the Zarzuela Palace has reported seeing the drones flying over several nights, promoting concerns from the Royal Guard, the security force in charge of protecting Spain's royal family. The aircraft have been spotted in restricted airspace over the Palace where King Felipe and Queen Letizia live with their two daughters. The Royal Guard has not yet been able to identify the drones' controllers or their motivation. The timing of these flights consistently occurs after dark. -
Spain's New S-80 Class Submarines Sink, But Won't Float

Spain's newly built submarine is 100 tons too heavy, which means it is unable to float. 'Unfortunately for the Spainards, Quartz reports that they have already sunk the equivalent of $680 million into the Isaac Peral, and a total of $3 billion into the entire quartet of S-80 class submarines. If Spain hopes to salvage its submarines, it must either find some weight that can be trimmed from the current design or lengthen the ship to accommodate the excess weight, The Local notes. Though the latter option is more feasible, it is expected to cost Spain an extra $9.7 million per meter.'"
