Re:So then...I know, I live here.
Another fun court case lately was a woman in my town who was arrested for selling sexual paraphenalia and porn out of a back room in an earring/tattoo parlor. She was charged with 15 counts of felony pornography distribution...it is actually illegal in my town to sell pornography or sex toys. Seriously. Many people were outraged that such things would be sold here, tarnishing our community. If there's a state that thinks everyone else's sex life is their business, I live in it.

Re:RecyclingI just dished out a bunch of mod points so I've got to post AC, but..
We just ran a story today about a local man who's spent his life savings working on a recycling machine for PET plastic.
I talked to a rep from his company for a good 45 minutes yesterday, and he told me quite a bit about it.
PET plastic hasn't been practical to recycle because it has to be completely cleaned of adhesive residues and other contaminants before being ground back into pellets. The amount of water used in this cleaning was a problem. A bigger problem was deciding what to do with the filthy water afterwards. You can't just pour it down the drain.
This local man came up with 2 machines, one which cleans the PET and grinds the plastic into pellets which can then be melted and recycled. The other machine purifies and reuses the cleaning water.
In any case, check out the article (above) and their website at NewEarthSystems.com as I think it may be of interest to you.

Re:Dear Land of the FreeFirst, all I need to know is "SALMON PAK." Saddam had a 707 sitting there with no runway. Care to guess what it was used for?
... That's where they trained terrorist on how to hijack planes with knives. SALMON PAK IS ALL I NEED! http://www.nationalreview.com/murdock/murdock04070 3.asp & http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/carson200406 020845.asp
I note some interesting quotes in the article:US Defence officials have said charges including murder may be brought against Marines following a US investigation into the 24 civilian deaths in Haditha, a stronghold of the Sunni Arab insurgency.
Many Iraqis believe unjustified killings by US troops are common, though few have been confirmed by investigations.
Mr Maliki also vowed to disband militias....
In order: We will punish the guilty. Many have been falsly accused. There are a lot of "militias" causing problems.
Oh, and My Lai? Yes, people went to jail.
How many WMDs were found? There was at least one -- when a roadside bomb fizzled, it was because it used a chemical warhead. Good thing the enemy didn't know what they had! Why didn't they? Becaause there were no special markings. One way Saddam hid such things. Every Western intelligence service was sure he had them, it wasn't just us. Even his generals thought he had them. By the 1990 cease fire, he was supposed to SHOW how he got rid of them. Maybe he did get rid of them, but he tried to make sure nobody knew that.
Was Iraq working with al Queda? You've heard of the leader of "Al Queda in Iraq." Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. A Jordanian. How did he come to be in Iraq? He was injured while fighting Americans in Afghanistan, if memory serves. He went to Iraq for medical treatment. Then, our war against terror followed him there.
How many of those {civillians killed} were at the hands of US or Australian forces? Too many, sure! But we try to minimize civilian casualties. The Brave Mujahadeen murder and terrorize civilians on purpose. The mayor of Tall 'Afar sent a letter of thanks to the US soldiers for liberating his town from this:By the summer of 2005, foreign jihadists - allied with al-Qaida - were ruling the city through intimidation and brute force. The situation seemed similar to Fallujah in 2004. Local police and tribal leaders were cowed, the population terrorized. Bombings, assassinations, beheadings and torture perpetrated by the terrorists against Iraqi citizens became commonplace. Even some victim's corpses were wired with explosives to kill family members coming to retrieve them.

No country is as pure as the angels. (Even ANGELS aren't that pure! Christians, Jews, and Moslems agree that some of them revolted against their creator.) Neither are any 100% evil. Though some come close to that, there are vestiges of decency in even the most corrupt. On balance? If some soldiers are about to capture me in battle, I hope they are more like ours than most others. We generally try to treat people decently. -
just $50k and a son-in-law may kill UTOPIA
In Utah, incumbent monopoly telco Qwest's modest investment of $50,000 in campaign contributions and its' powerful lobbyists (one is the son-in-law of the State Senate President) may be enough to kill the UTOPIA 18-city initiative to build a publicly-owned FTTH (fiber to the home) system. A bill (openly crafted by Qwest) that would effectively outlaw city's financing the project sailed out of the Senate and threatens to become law. This action comes after 18 city councils have voted to join UTOPIA and 6 have already made financial guarantees . The UTOPIA system is based on an open-access model allowing multiple competing providers to offer voice, data and video services to subscribers.
This comes as the Salt Lake City Tribune, a strong foe of the UTOPIA initiative, ran an article wondering why Utah is losing its' position as a major technology center.
There are more UTOPIA links at http://communityfiber.blogspot.com/2004_02_08_comm unityfiber_archive.html#107630357108945975 -
Re:So now we end up fighting wars over water?
We had plenty of water. If you read the headlines, you'll see that our supply is becoming strained.
And actually, the Arabs do have water. Or had. Iraq is blessed with an abundant supply of water, so much so in fact that some had speculated we did not go there for the oil as much as the water.
Water is going to become increasingly scarce as time goes by. Even power production using it may not be economically feasable... unless, again, you can use sea water. -
Cedar City!
I lived there from 89 to 2000! Graduated from Southern Utah University in 1993. The local paper sucks. Read the Trib instead.

Good PointThe HBO/Showtime model works, if you are not a broadcaster. I was referring to broadcast television, and should have made that explicit.
Most of the people on slashdot probably don't know people who can't afford cable. I do. Some people I know can't afford the $15/month for basic cable, much less the $10/month for HBO. Their soures of info are the local paper and broadcast tv. And, in their market, the news is paid for by the entertainment.
