Google Privacy Counsel Facing Criminal Charges
ProfJonathan writes "According to a story in the IAPP's Privacy Advisor, Google's Paris-based global privacy counsel, Peter Fleischer, is facing criminal charges in Italy for defamation based upon a user's posting of a video to Google Video. Mr. Fleischer was on his way to the University of Milan for a speaking engagement when he was met by Italian law enforcement officials. As with the 1997 case of Compuserve's Felix Somm and the 2006 arrest in Texas of BetOnSportsUK's CEO during a layover on a trip to Costa Rica, this case once again highlights the risks faced by executives and employees of online companies whose activities may be legal and protected in their own countries, but illegal elsewhere in the world. Troubling, and worth watching." -
Privacy Protection for Handheld App Webpage Access?
Prof. Jonathan Ezor, Touro Law Center asks: "Is anyone using a third-party application on a Treo, Blackberry or other handheld to access login-protected Internet resources such as eBay, satellite radio services, and the like? (I'm thinking of programs like Abidia or MiniXM.) If so, have you thought at all about who might be running those services, and who is getting access to your login information via the service in addition to the site you want to access? If this does concern you, what have you done about it?" -
Acclaim Entertainment Files for Bankruptcy
Prof. Jonathan Ezor, Touro Law Center writes "According to this story in Long Island Business News, Acclaim Entertainment has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in the Eastern District of New York bankruptcy court, meaning it will liquidate its assets and shut down. The story states in part, 'Computer game maker Acclaim Entertainment (Nasdaq: AKLM) has filed for voluntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which would result in the liquidation of the company's assets. The company filed papers in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Central Islip that estimated its debts at more than $100 million and its assets at $10 million to $50 million. The filing said it had more than 200 creditors.' Game Over." -
Broadest Coverage for Wi-Fi Services?
Prof. Jonathan Ezor asks: "My PalmOne Tungsten C has built-in Wi-Fi, and I'm generally fortunate to find free Wi-Fi hotspots in many of the places where I travel. In others, though, my only choices are one or more flavors of paid access. I know that many of the pay-for-use Wi-Fi providers (T-mobile, Wayport, etc.) offer reciprocal arrangements with other carriers, which brings me to my question: Which Wi-Fi carrier and plan offers the best chance of available service, in the northeast United States, for the best price? Keep in mind that, because my primary Wi-Fi hardware is the Tungsten C, carriers that require multiple software to run simultaneously (e.g. keeping a browser open while checking e-mail, or having multiple browser windows open) aren't feasible. Thanks for your input." -
eBay Revises, Explains Its Privacy Policy
Prof. Jonathan Ezor, Touro Institute for Business, writes "eBay has just announced it will change its privacy policy, and has posted a summary of its changes. Good discussion of how and why they provide information to internal service providers, a point missed by many privacy policies."
