Life imitating art: dystopiaThe Morrow Project, Gamma World and the other ancient RPGs portrayed a rather dim, dystopian view of the future. Stories like Brave New World (Huxley), 1984 (Orwell), Farhenheight 451 (Bradbury), did as well. The latter group was intended as a warning of potential consequences. Too bad, but they seem to be serving as a template for policy makers rather than as a warning.
Another one to add is the film Rollerball which fits the same genre of obscure sci fi. A short but key scene deals with the electronic archive which has been used to effectively destroy key information through technological obselecence. There a few large corporations have taken over the planet and run the media and other information channels to keep the masses under control. Is this the path that policy makers wish to chose?
Destroying access to information won't do anything except hurt U.S. citizens. It's a rather unpatriotic move considering the countries background in freedom and openness. It certainly looks like win (or at least a major concession) for "the forces of evil". However, it could be a key tool in certain political agendas.

Blinktags were missing
Does anyone read text emphasized like that ? !
I mean, who was writing that statement for SafeSurf? A six year old who cries about someone breaking their toys? Maybe they should've used this (warning, popupbanner) little toy to make their text look even better. But form follows content, and the content is even worse. They even dare to suggest someone might die because of MAPS' actions and proceed to construct a, however unlikely, scenario for this.
SafeSurf very obviously have it on their agenda to impose their will on anyone running a website all over the world, and their drivel about not wanting to censor, but only to enforce "correct labeling" of websites is just a heap of steaming bullshit, because after everything is labelled someone will start sorting out the 'bad' stuff, after all the effect is very obviously censoring, and all that nicely worded (in fact quite nauseating) writeup of theirs doesn't change that fact a bit.
So someone put the label 'spammer' over their block of ip addresses and as a consequence noone can hear them. Maybe that should give them a bit to think about. But no, when you're the only one, who knows what's best fore everyone else, you better don't think too much or you'll never get the job done. -

Several downloadable Enigma simulations...
There are links to many downloadable simulations here, including an Abwehr Enigma sim for Windows. There even appears to be one written for Palm Pilot.

Win 95 B OSR 2.1
The stablest beneath 2k though.

Re:Material that Microsoft owns.
No, they don't own it: We do not claim ownership [...] reserve a right to use...
You are still responsible, and you are the owner. But M$ has the right to use it.
If you'd put enough kernel patches via hotmail, M$ could include them into windoze (ironically THIS was good for us). But they'd put it in modifictatedly so YOU dont have any rights on M$ code (but they on yours).
This sucks.
Read this license and tell me whether it's prohibiting them...

Some of his stuff.Well, I was trying to jog my memory as to which MAD art Martin did, so I went a-hunting. This is the best I found. It's got about 15 comics. The ones with dialogue have been translated into German, but most of them don't have speach anyway.
The site is here: http://members.tripod.de/mad_2/donmar tin.html
Funny stuff.

Is that really the goal, though?
Why should the latest, coolest thing and ease of use be mutually exclusive? All it takes is a good design plan to build something that is easy to use from the beginning.
If we want to take more of the Microsoft market share
I'm not sure if this is really a priority.. I used to think that we as a community should be out to beat Microsoft like the media always says we are, but now that I look back over the last couple years.. I don't care what Microsoft does, or how big their market share is. The open source community has created something that has made a huge impact, and won't be silenced by an iron fisted corporation, no matter how large they may be.
I've still got X running at 640x480
User error. Fix your X configuration to support multiple resolutions, and press CtrlAlt+ or CtrlAlt- (Using the + and - on your keypad) Or if you demand a graphical one-click answer rather than a three-key binding, see apps such as the Gnome QuickRes Applet.
this video card and modem won't work
Very few, if any, modern (I say modern as in 'made in the last 3 years') and common video cards break X.
The only modems that don't work in Linux are WinModems, which require a Windows driver to function as a modem (And actually, work is underway to fix that pathetic attempt at Windows-specific hardware)
sound is really complicated to set up
I don't know about other distros, but RedHat enables pretty much every kernel sound module available in the default kernel. Any SoundBlaster-esque card should work out of the box, which covers pretty much everything packaged by a major vendor, unless it's a weird speakerphone/modem/soundcard monstrosity like I've seen in the HP Pavillions.
Sure, the situation isn't perfect. But think about what you're asking for. Much of the hardware support in Linux that we take for granted was made possible by hard efforts of volunteers who pounded away on devices to reverse-engineer their functionality. It's becoming easier now as companies are being more forthcoming about their hardware specs, but it's still work being done by volunteers. Don't gripe if they're not supporting everything fast enough for you. -
EXE tools
The link http://www.suddendischarge.com contains a large collection of tools for playing around with DOS executables. I wrote myself a PKLite-alike wrapper for EXE executables, called Mess 1.31, which includes some "anti-debugging" code. It is open-sourced, except for the anti-debugging part (you may still find the full 1.07
:). The HackStop project is the same - version 1.11 has been open-sourced too. Nowadays, DOS is about dead; that's why these projects get open. Most of them still have a taste of the old virus/cracking scene, when the .EXE format was as scary as the NE (for Win16) and PE format (used for Win32 and BeOS applications) were a few years ago. Micros~1's PE format is still being researched. The UPX program can compress these PE programs, it might be open-sourced soon. Uncompressors like Procdump exist too, but ProcDump is probably not going open-source. What you might be looking for, is the code that wrappers like HackStop or UPX add to the program being compressed or "protected": if the program is run, the compressed part is decompressed and the relocations must be "filled in". Basically this is what Dutky says above: add DS+10h (10h=16 bytes for the Program Segment Prefix) to all offsets named in the relocation table in the EXE header of the original program.
