Re:If first you don't succeed...
One thing I've noticed about Diet soda is that it creates gas and bloated feelings, especially when I have it with lunch. From what I understand, it's made from aspartic acid, an amino acid and excitatory neurotoxin. It also causes havoc with my GI and I crap like a racehorse.
Interestingly, Nutrasweet was originally owned by GD Searle and then got approved by the FDA under the leadership of Donald Rumsfeld (he had a private career for a while in between Nixon and Bush..) Later Monsanto bought them. Then the brand went to
According to many people, Nutrasweet is not a good thing to be drinking in quantity. If you drink 8 cans of diet soda per day, you are risking your self. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, aspartame causes: Birth defects, Diabetes, Emotional disorders, Epilepsy/seizures, Migraines, Lowered sperm count, etc.
They are also lobbying to change the food labels in order to better hide additives: Truth in Labling. Of course, to be two sided, Nutrasweet denies that there is anything wrong with it. Sort of like tobacco used to be good for you.
One last article mentions the entire history. Very interesting to see the revolving door in the FDA and the pharma industry. Notice how they just now stopped putting "trans-fats" in chips and everyone knows they are bad, cause heart disease, etc.. 5 years ago, everyone thought they were fine. Nutrasweet is NOT good for you. -
this isn't the only problem with the food chain!
What's missing in this picture is some approach that makes food safe, period. While it's laudable to want to have our long arms of the law around the whole food chain of command, it hardly addresses (in my opinion) real evil, and general detriment to the humanity collective health. There are products and chemicals in food today that for various percentages of the population cause severe side effects, and potentially (probably) are more dangerous than the highly publicized "contamination" food issues.
If you want an example of one good read about just one chemical (MSG, introduced in many nefarious and hidden forms to our foods), read and branch out on this site .
The RFID idea doesn't address:
- artificial sweeteners (I am one of the "urban myth" people who gets excruciating migraines if I ingest nutrasweet.)
- synthesized fats (olestra?) (make sure you're keeping track of the nearest available rest rooms!)
- MSG (see above) (and read the referenced site, you're likely to be surprised -- the biggest surprise for me was how many different forms MSG takes, i.e., what amounts to MSG can take forms in which the manufacturer is not required to label it. Even more insidious, they can label their product "MSG Free"!)
- preservatives
- salts (I'm just guessing, but if you take common foods (mainstream), and by the time you ate the RDA calorie-wise, the sodium that came along for the ride would exceed the RDA by at least a factor of 2)
I see what this article talks about as useful in some sense, but the sum total malaise caused by contamination of our food supply with weird (and to many, unknown) chemicals outpaces, outweighs, and almost trumps the money that would be spent on a massive RFID program.

Hidden MSG Sources
Here's a good page listing hidden sources of MSG. It's amazing - just about every prepared food outside of the Pergo'ed organic ai$le has some hidden MSG added to it.
There are also lots of natural sources of MSG. You can't get away from it, and you'll pry my soy sauce from my cold dead hands, but I see no reason to seek it out either.
Anecdotally, my friends who have gone on whole-food diets have lost significant weight - I can't tell if it's due to MSG reduction or just feeling more satiated from better foods. -

Re:MSG is evil
Oh, and apparently, there's a conspiracy to hide MSG in food too.
Bottom line, make your own damn food.
