Re:That's okay
I think you're getting confused between copyright and patents. Copyrights on software are very much allowed (and alive) in Canada.
There isn't much law on software _patents_ in Canada, with Google showing 1 case - the patent was thrown out because it was an equation in software.

Bookmark sidebars compared.
Extensions are a bonus rather than a pain for me. Firefox is perfectly usable without extensions if they are that much of a bother, they are strictly a bonus.
Notice I mentioned interface issues with bookmark bar deficience and sidebar ugliness and wastefullness. Is there a cure for either?

Look at all the wasted space for the side panel buttons on the Opera side panel (left) for some reason not getting favicons either.
I vastly prefer the better use of space on firefox sidebar, the favicons and the hierachical view. (opera only shows the current directory level)
I was a longtime user and I still try every version of Opera, but I never find a reason to go back and I keep finding more reasons to use firefox every day. -
What about Canada?
Canada also has a 50 year time limit on copyright (which starts after the artists dies, which may be different from the EU). It would seem that the threat from Canada in this regard would be greater than that from the EU, since we're just over the border up here.

'moral rights'
In canadian law there is a concept called 'moral rights' which would allow the 'rights holder' (the artist / copyright holder) to prevent others from making unauthorised modifications. Note the law doesn't prohibit modifications, just allows the rights holder to prevent you from modifications if they desire. Copyright law in Canada has details if anyone is interested.

Re:In Canada
he govt. regulators did a good job in forcing the monopoly telcos to offer up the last mile at (almost) reasonable wholesale rates.

Re:Oh, CanadaThe problem with Bell's HSE is that their network tends to be slow. A bill was passed about two years ago stating that local ISPs can use the phone networks in Canada to provide DSL to their customers. I have a DSL connection from Magma Communications and their service has never gone down, has never been interrupted even in the slightest without a mailing from the sales office, and even then it's in the wee hours of the morning.
Broadband internet in Ottawa is actually the norm. I think I can name two people I know who have a dialup account (and everyone I can think of who I know right now has online access) in the area. Rogers Cablesystems provides Rogers@Home service to the area (which will change in the next little while I would imagine) and provided Rogers Wave before that. With Bell's HSE and local ISPs like Magma, Trytel, and TravelNet all providing DSL at a low cost, dialup as a connection type is silly.
I would like to mention that one of the reasons why @Home is probably dying is because of the amount of money they have to pour into support due to their horrible service. I have several friends who work for or have worked for Taima in Ottawa, a company that Rogers@Home uses to outsource support to (one of many) and apparently they have a lack of employees.
I wouldn't say Broadband is dead, just fairly mismanaged.

Ever work for an ISP?If you have you'd know that XP is a religion in an ISP web development office.
I worked for Trytel Internet for eight months doing web development and left because of the development model they chose to adopt. It's difficult to develop anything modular, extendable and scalable when your customer needs these twenty things next Tuesday.
Now that's not to say that the model is wrong or bad, it's just not what I personally would subscribe to. I like documents stating that indeed we need a certain number of things and we have this reasonable timeline in which to do them in.
The only real flaw I see in the idea of XP is if you have managers who make horrible business decisions then it's kind of a null isn't it?
