Walk-thru Fog Screen
fluor2 writes "Ever wanted a screen floating in air? Two scientists, Ismo Rakkolainen and Karri Palovuori, both from Tampere University of Technology, Finland have come up with an idea. It is called the Walk-thru Fog Screen. The fog screen, consisting of 'fog' that is blown down from top, and the protective laminar airflow creates a thin and crisp surface, pretty undisturbed by the air in the rest of the room, making it ideal for projector usage. People can walk right through this screen of fog. Their next idea is to use the fog as a touch-screen, making it even more accessible." For a screen one can walk through, the image quality is better than I'd have thought. -

The Tiger Security Tool Has Been Resurrected
javifs writes "Do you remember TAMU's security tools? If so you might remember a tool that was developed when COPS, SATAN, and ISS were (back in 1994): Tiger. You might think it was dead, well it's not. Tiger has resurrected at Savannah and even has a new webpage and logo! (cool, isn't it?) Tiger has some interesting features that merit its resurrection, including a modular design that is easy to expand, and its double edge: an audit tool and a host intrusion detection system tool. Free Software intrusion detection is currently going many ways, however, from network IDS (with Snort), to the kernel (LIDS, or SNARE for Linux and Systrace for OpenBSD, for example), not mentioning file integrity checkers (many of these: aide, integrit samhain, tripwire...) and logcheckers (even more of these, check Counterpane's Log Analysis pages). Also, free software Linux/*BSD distributions have a miriad of security tools to do local security checks: Mandrake's msec, OpenBSD's /etc/security, SUSE's Seccheck... maybe Tiger could substitute them at some point in the future. Do you think Tiger has a place in the toolkit of the security professional? (I might be biased, though, after all I'm the upstream developer for Tiger now :-) ) In any case, have you downloaded and tested the latest release candidate for Tiger version 3.2?" -
Walk-Thru Virtual Environment

WAVE, a Walk-thru Virtual Environment is a novel, low-cost, and simple method for forming a superior quality physically penetrable fog display. It is a break-through technology, literally! This work has international patents pending. An early prototype was constructed with honeycomb paper as a low-cost laminar airflow generator. When the screen is formed, images can be either rear- or front-projected onto it. Despite of being a very early prototype, the experimental fog screen already proves the operating principle with excellent results." -
The Waning of the Overlapping Window Paradigm?
Bingo Foo asks: "The paradigm of movable, overlapping windows on the desktop has been around, and indeed dominant, for a long time. The original motivation for this was to mimic sheets of paper on a desktop. This is a useful metaphor, but may be a bit limiting given the capacity a computer has for automation of the layout and display of "desktop" objects. Lately, I have been pleased to see an increase in 'framing,' 'docking,' 'stacking,' and 'tabbing' being used, starting most conspicuously with frames in the web. More significantly, it has shown up as an application workspace paradigm that improved previously crappy MDI implementations in programs like Visual Studio and KDevelop. In my opinion, the most promising experimental application, even if still immature, is one of the neatest window managers around, ion. Does anyone else see a time when movable, tear-off docking and automated full-time tiling completely take over from the free-floating manually arranged desktops of today?"
