UBitMenu for Office 2007 and 2010
UBitMenu for Office 2007 and 2010 is a toolbar that stays in place and shows the toolbar that you use to have in Office 2003. I use it for manly for Word. I no longer have to fight that blasted ribbon. http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/

It just feels good !!
Of course, it takes some seconds to load, but LO then is fast and snappy (much faster with big docs than MS Office !!)
For the ribbon, I hate it. On computers at work, i either install libre office, when the company IT allows, or I use this : http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/
which is really great for having back my menus in MS office 2007/2010 !!For me, the ribbon is inconsistent and encombering the screen. I will not spend a 1 month learning curve, just because MS wants me to get locked in to a crappy UI. Many people are like that.
Libreoffice is really great. Calc and writer are surpassing MSOffice 2010.

Re:"The criticism died down"... oh really?
I am still not as productive in Office 2007 as I was with previous versions of Office, and neither is everyone else in my department.
It might be worth deploying one of these if you want your sane interfaces back:

http://www.addintools.com/index.htmlThe starter edition of the first one is free, and amongst other things includes a classic menu interface for Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The others need paid licences for business use, but also support 2010, and the third one has versions that support Access, Outlook, etc.

Re:Ribbon?
Really great points. But if MS had added a ribbon element like this: http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/
We could have met needs from both - why they don't just create this feature set suggests that they don't want to meet the needs of both kinds users..

Re:Ribbon?
It is missing features from the old menu system. There's stuff I can do in the old version that I simply can't find the equivalent in the ribbon. I know the option still exists, b/c I use this tool: http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/
It adds in some of the deeper menu features back in via the old menus. That's the only way I know to access some more obscure features in the newer versions of Word.. It's weird that there are features in Word now that apparently have no UI access - but it appears to me at least that this is the case.

Re:Ribbon?
You might find this useful: http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/
It adds a ribbon element which is basically all the 2003 version menus. I have no idea why MS doesn't provide this as an option out of the box.. The ribbon is better for some stuff but there's just way too much that isn't exposed *at all* by the ribbon, and having this menu system lets me get to them via the menus I already know..
