Not TrueThere was a community meeting and the voice of the community was he heard. Try reading a more recent thread on Ubuntu-Users for the full story. For example, this message.
You're probably confused because the image on the Ubuntu site is not updated yet.

Re:Controversial theme...
Actually, that's not true...
There was a community meeting on IRC on Monday at which everyone got to put their viewpoint and consensus was to keep the themes available but not to make them the defaults.

New artwork was created and uploaded for the final release, the default GDM theme is plainer and without the three friends on it.

The screenshot links posted were actually from our Preview and Release Candidate releases, not the real thing. -

Controversial theme...
I see they stuck with the Community Loathed (tm) GDM theme...
Check the ubuntu-users thread about it...
Folks aren't mad about the nature of the theme - at least, not most of them - but rather the fact that the community spoke its voice regarding the theme (to get rid of it!), and the devs refused to listen...
Not a good start for a distro that claims to be community-based!

Re:GNOME works for me
"If you want to try out GNOME, the best way is to install Ubuntu Linux on a spare computer."
Better yet, just burn the new Ubuntu Live CD. It can be found here.

Or
See the Debian Planet story back on the 16th. Which linked you to the announcement and also an interview.

Ubuntu
btw, it's "Ubuntu", not "Ubuntu Linux" or "Ubuntu GNU/Linux". Just "Ubuntu". Yes, the website is "ubuntulinux", but please ignore that
