Re:Editors?
" Doesn't Slashdot have editors that are supposed to analyze and edit user postings."
This is often deliberate. Slashdot editors often choose words that are sensational and inflamatory. Accuracy takes a back seat in these cases.
"Lately, Slashdot quality has been going down the tubes."
My recollection is that Slashdot has always had this quality. One way in which Slashdot has changed lately is the epidemic of those "free iPod" pyramid schemes. I can't imagine that people find it worth the effort to sign up friends (or even strangers) into a pyramid scheme when scam-free iPods are readily available at the local retailer. $299 isn't a lot, really -- even if you make only $15 an hour, that's just 20 hours of work, and you don't have to annoy anybody in the process.
"Do you want a free iPod? You can have one here [freeipods.com]."
Case in point.

Re:Google cache
If you have to get five other suckers to sign up in order to get your iPod, it's a pyramid. At least with MLM outfits like Herbalife, you can theoretically make money selling the pills and without building a downline.
Turns out that only 4% of the FreeiPods.com suckers have gotten their units and they're being spammed, too. It most certainly is a pyramid scheme.
"ethical business practices." Funny.

Re:-NOT ALL DELL LAPTOPS SUPPORTED-
My CPi A is also not supported by Dell, but I do have audio support thanks to a patch on 2.2.11+ kernels that was originally for Sony machines. I believe that 2.2.14 includes this patch as default. Try: http://www.uglx.org/sony.html

Re:The @#*&%! Neomagic sound chip in my VAIO??????The NM256 sound chip works OK with RedHat 6.1. It does have problems coming out of suspend, though. This is supposed to be fixed in the newest version of the driver, but the patch only works against the generic kernel sources, and I've been too busy to download them.
Audio does skip with the Redhat kernel. You need to re-compile with "Use DMA if available" set to yes in the block devices section. (Sorry, I use make xconfig, so I don't remember the actual name of the parameter.)
The only serious problem I've had (other than the LoseModem)is that PC Card services and the built-in EtherPro network card don't want to play nice with each other. Once again, this is supposed to be fixed in the EPro driver included in 2.2.13+.
A good source of VAIO sound information is available at www.uglx.org/sony.html
