Re:Couldn't find a UK host, but I sure tried hard.
Try http://uk2.net/. I've never had a problem with them and their hosting prices are not far off US prices.
Hmm nice attempt to get some referral points with dreamhost there. -
Re:A sword that cuts both ways
If you were not already moderated five I would mod you up. UK were recently bouncing mail from GMail and British Telecom because they were blacklisted. I failed to receive a lot of mail I wanted. Similarly Sri Lanka Telecom have been blacklisted in the past, again a lot of false positives (block about half of a whole country's email addresses, what a good idea) If you send from a blacklisted IP most ISPs (at least in Britain) simply silently lose the incoming mail, so, very often, you do not even know that your email is getting though. You are right RBLs are just vigilantes and I wish i could opt-out of UK2's use of them. Does anyone know of any decent service that does not use blacklisting?

Re:Not really free
If you're in the UK checkout uk2.net. They offer free dialup and email and seem to be staying in business. I've been using their free email service for a couple of years and I've often used their free dialup when a modem connection is all that is available to me and I need to download drivers or software; just enter the number, type any username/password and you're connected.

Re:Anti-Spam technique
Well 0.24 gbp a year isn't really that bad.

Does anyone know of a decent merchant that will handle transactions well in uk pounds and preferably with support for euros too?
I'd like to find one that isn't for the sort of 'dumb webadmin' where they run all your shopping carts for you. I want a proper one that I can invoke from my own server, presumably by https that will leave my site feeling proper and professional.
Certainly I'm not overly impressed with some credit card systems online. The worldpay one is ugly and kept spawning new windows and using javascript refresh's to the point that even I (who regularly have about 50 windows open) was struggling to keep the plot. I've had other ones that dont properly track users and due to the fact that my modem connection broke midway through ordering they billed me twice (even though i was using a fixed IP dialup at the time i think). Surely that sort of inefficiency is inexcusable - especially considering 5 months later they STILL haven't refunded the money. Not wanting to name names there are better places to get domain names like www.freeparking.co.uk.
