Excursions at the Speed of Light
D4C5CE writes "S/F fans can finally find out what you really get to see at relativistic velocity, and tourists are one step closer to "doing Europe in a day" in these amazing Space Time Travel simulations of the Theoretical Astrophysics & Computational Physics department at the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics Tübingen. They put you in a driver's seat that both Armstrong the Astronaut and Armstrong the Cyclist would equally enjoy, in simulators built to ride a bike at the speed of light." -
Another Publisher Challenges Legality of Links
NewtonsLaw writes: "It seems that the legality of hypertext linkiing has once a gain been called into question according to this story running on Wired.com. As the former online publisher of 7am.com, I was once threatened by the Nando Times in a similar manner when I was linking to their stories. Local TV broadcaster TVNZ also made all sorts of noise about the illegality of linking to their content back in 1966 but have since come to their senses. Over the years I've had similar bitchy complaints from a number of online publishers who simply haven't worked out that links from other sites are something to be encouraged because the drive traffic and boost search-engine ratings. A great resource for those interested in the history, opinions and law on the matter of the legality of linking is the Link Controversy page created and maintained by Stefan Bechtold. Most publishers eventually realize that trying to block linking through the courts is a really dumb thing to do -- but there's always someone who simply doesn't get it." -
Recommendations for Neural Network Modeling Software?
iconian asks: "I'm looking for a freeware or a low-cost neural network modeling software to do some academic research and perhaps also to teach an undergraduate course. I need something that is not difficult to use and doesn't require an extensive programming background. I've tried PDP++ and I've found it to be very powerful but a bit overwhelming because of the programming needed to perform seemingly minor tasks. Right now, I'm trying out SNNS with the Java GUI but the interface is not as intuitive as PDP++ and documentation is a bit sparse. Do you guys have any suggestions?" -
KLyX Beta
Roberto Alsina wrote in to tell us that KLyX has started beta testing. LyX is the extremely popular typesetting package, and KLyX is the K port of it. Looks really nice too...
