Use Univention UCS
Its a Debian based business Server with an ldap directory backend. It spans multiple servers and roles. It seamlessly integrates samba4, so windows hosts are also happy with it.
It comes with a UCC (Univention Coorporate Client) which you can install via network boot. (just a few clicks.) Its KDE Based, lean and makes a lot of sense. Of course you can also hookup ubuntu.
I have done large installations 2500+ Users as well as 15 users shops with it.

Univentions UCS
Check out http://www.univention.de/ucs.html . It's a true AD replacement and if you are willing to compile there packages on your own, you won't have to pay fees. If you stick to prebuild binaries, you have to pay.
UCS is either a replacement or a teamplayer *with* AD.

original injunctionThe settlement is based on this preliminary injunction from may 30 2003 containing - besides juristic framework - just one sentence:
Der Antragsgegnerin wird [...] verboten, im geschaeftlichen Verkehr die Behauptung zu verbreiten, dass LINUX-Betriebssysteme unrechtmaessig erworbenes Eigentum von SCO UNIX beinhalten und/oder dass Endanwender, die LINUX einsetzen, fuer die damit verbundenen Schutzrechtsverletzungen der SCO Intellectual Properties haftbar gemacht werden koennen.
I try to translate, but beware my english (maybe someone can do a better job on this):
[SCO Group GmbH] must not spread the assertion that linux operating systems contain unlawfully obtained property of SCO UNIX and/or that end users could get hold responsible for implicated intellectual property infringement implicated by using linux.

Re:We can only hope
$10,800 USD seems a bit low, considering that SCOs lies and threats have probably damaged Linux companies and consultants many times that amount.
You were right if this fine was for messing around with the Linux community. This fine is only because SCO did not follow a preliminary injunction promptly. Certain statements were shown on sco.de *after* this injunction came into effect.
If you speak German, you might check out the original injunction (one of many) a this place here. -
Re:good faith discussions
> When SUSE did this in Germany SCO backed down.
I thought I remembered it this way also, but searching for the story on /. came up with zero.
I did find the story about a German court granting an injunction against sco:
SCO Stands Defiant, German Court Grants Preliminary Injunction
But it was not SuSe, but univention_ GmbH that went to court to get SCO to STFU.
a German court in Bremen granted an injunction to Univention GmbH, a German Linux integrator, against SCO Group GmbH, SCO's German division. The injunction prevents SCO from saying that Linux contains illegally obtained SCO intellectual property, aka Unix source code. If SCO continues to hold this position, they would have to pay a fine of 250,000 Euros.
If there was a similar action by SuSe, I couldn't find it.
