Re:Way too confusing
First version of Solaris/Intel was 2.1: http://www.unixguide.net/sun/faq/1.05.shtml
Sounds like you got a good deal on annual maintenance
... I think we were paying like 10%/year for Sun workstations. -
Re:mac != unix
Rip the GUI off of a Mac and let the fun begin.
How's this for comparison: Ubuntu is not Linux. Rip out Debian from Ubuntu and let the fun begin.
You're saying that it's not Unix because Apple has built components on top of Unix, that it requires to function. Therefore it negates the very fact the it uses Unix subsytems. OS X may not work like how you would like Unix to work. That doesn't mean it isn't Unix. Also for the record, there does exist OS X without the Apple systems. It's called Darwin.
Unix users have over 20 years of accumulated experience, knowledge and culture based on how all the other "Unixen" tend to behave.
Which varies by vendor. There are cheatsheets on the internet that tell you how to do things in Unix. How do I check on total physical RAM on a particular system? Guess what? It varies depending on the flavor or Unix you are using.

Re:untrue
It's interesting that you mention this, because my FreeBSD passwd file came with the following stock entries:
root:*:0:0:Charlie &:/root:/bin/csh
toor:*:0:0:Bourne-again Superuser:/root:
but yet it doesn't seem to be a problem. -
Re:The REAL tragady of P2P
Linux fanboys are getting to be really uneducated nowadays. One of these days, they'll say that Linux has nothing to do with Unix.
Allow me to educate the fanboy a little with documentation from the FreeBSD project: Why use (what are) a.out and ELF executable formats? -
New laws more important than old onesGenerally, more effort is put into making new laws rather than getting rid of old obsolete ones. The basic problem with repealing old laws is they become bikeshed type events with endless debate on things that don't really matter. Secondly, as a politician, no one will remember you for the laws you got rid of, only the ones you brought into existance.
Also, keep in mind that laws that are not enforced might as well not exist. If they do get suddenly enforced, I believe a court may very well turn over any decision because of this selective enforcement.

Google is your friend
The answer is here.
You might want to remove the hard drive, and see what happens when you boot it without a hard drive in. Maybe this will give you some sort of clue on what is wrong with it.
If your absolutely have to, buy a 2.5" hard drive adapter for your desktop machine. You can then format the laptop hard drive from that.
