Re:Less Opportuntity in Texas than in Mexico? Hehe
What does that tell you? So Hispanics and Blacks aren't very interested in careers in the IT field.
If you can't prove this assertion then it is just idle speculation on your part...What do you want to do, start discriminating against white people because they're the only ones who apparently get into the field?
I see plenty of Blacks and Asians in my IT department, but none of them are managers, so it is obvious that there is discrimination in favor of White people going on. That is inequitable, unfair, and unjust to non-Whites.despite being a high school dropout, I managed to work my way up to an engineering and IT administration position at one of the biggest airports in North America.
Hmmm, a White dropout is able to make a success of himself, and I am unable to. The reason I am unable to succeed must be because of a personal failing on my part.
It must be because after I recently asked for a promotion to a programming position I was told I was unqualified even though I have over 220 college hours (60+ of which are IT classes with a 3.91 GPA) and know multiple operating systems and programming languages. Of course since Whites are not racist and there is no discrimination extant today then it has to be me, huh?Great! If we look even remotely similar, we could pull a passport swap, and not have to worry about those nasty immigration procedures.
Why even worry about he niceties of immigration? Why not make a run for the border? Don't you know that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) only goes after Mexicans, not Canadians?Yet, as a Slashdot contributor and reader, you're probably in the IT field, and probably quite affluent.
Well I made $27K US last year busting my ass in Operations, and I am living from check to check. If the White fuckers, err managers, above me would ever promote me then my answer to your question would be yes. As it stands I am making it but definitely not "affluent" (my main computer at home is a 300 mhz celeron with a 15" monitor!).Apparently, our definitions of "progressive" are divergent at best.
If you are not sure of the meaning of a word, consult a dictionary, don't make up a new meaning that no one else agrees with. Maybe this will help: Progressive
As for taxes, I don't mind paying them. After all I get national defense, interstate highways, meat inspections, etc. Everybody knows that companies don't break the law or act unethically and you can rely on Ronald McDonald not to serve you a e-coli infested burger. I guess as long as your heirs can sue Mickey D's then all is well with the world...Similarily, did that land belong to the Chicanos, or didn't it belong to the Mayans, Incans and Aztecs? You know, Hispanics are not native to Mexico. So, you're complaining that land that your people stole from the aboriginals only 300 years earlier has been stolen?
Jesus, as long a you get you history from the White Power movement then, yes you are correct. If you bothered to read some academic historical sources you would find out that that statement is false.
The Spaniards differed from the British in colonization methods. Whereas the British and Americans killed off the Native Americans, the Spaniards preferred to co-opt the natives. In short they intermarried with the natives and formed a whole new people, the Chicanos (this is before there was a border between the US and Mexico -- in fact this happened before the US and Mexico even existed).
And if you look at the so-called Mexican-American War, it was bogus, just like the Spanish-American War. Chicanos did not go out looking for a war, the White Americans did. What you don't seem to understand is that the Chicano people didn't come to the US, the US came to us and like the Native Americans we have been suffering ever since...Heheh. I'd be grateful. I'm sure that you have far more opportunity in Texas than you would in Mexico. Based on US Border Patrol activities in that area, it seems that lots of other Chicanos feel differently from you.
White politicans acting in our name are the ones increasing the conflict level on the border. Your average Chicano believes as I do, however there are plenty of "Mexican Americans" and "Hispanics" who would disagree with me. These are the people that Blacks call "Uncle Tom" and Chicanos call "Tio Taco", people who come from a disavantaged background and have made it with some help, then turn their backs on their people because their money has somehow "Whitened" them.
Many Chicanos do feel as I do: an uproar erupted when a young Mexican was murdered by a U.S. Marine, who not surprisingly got away with it. They say it was an "anti-drug" operation but does the U.S. have armed Marines patrolling the Canadian border?
I consider Canada a more "progressive" place because they do not seem to shoot at people from the U.S. trying to sneak into Canada...Gimme a break. You spout sheer idiocy.
When you can't attack the message, attack the messenger...And you'd do well to get a realistic viewpoint and an understanding of world history.
I am working on a History degree from the University of Houston. I'll bet I have read many more history books than you have...
Come to a barrio in Texas or California and and spout the same nonsense you are going on about and I guarantee you will get your ass kicked. In fact, I only have one piece of advice for you: if you move to the U.S., move to Idaho. Maybe Randy Weaver's Ruby Ridge compound is for sale...

Re:yes it really sucks
You're forgetting a very important thing called Jim Crow, which was not a product of the market but a government program.
ROTFL!!! At one time Jim Crow may have been government sponsored, but now it is a social and cultural thing, not a political thing. Once the old political obstacles were removed new social and cultural obstacles were put up. Why else have we never had a non-White president?
We minorities have problems because of racist White people, not a racist government. Even though the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments and numerous Civil Rights laws have stopped most of the overt racism in the political realm, there seems to be more racism in the social/cultural realm these days (just go to any White power website to see what I mean).Case in point: unions prior to the civil rights movement were notoriously racist.
Jesus, first you are talking about government then you jump to unions. Do I need to remind you that unions are not the government? Now put down the pipe and try to keep up with me.The government was never the friend of minorities, and they would have done much better in a true free market in which they were free to offer their services to employers without being subject to violence. True, many employers were racist, but enough weren't that they would have been able to get decent jobs had the government not forcibly prevented them from doing so.
But earlier you claimed that it was the fact that there were more workers available is what made the economy grow and you totally disregarded the social and cultural aspects that interfere with the "rationality" humans need to have truly "free markets". Contrary to the dogma you learned from the Libertarian propaganda you seemingly have swallowed hook, line and sinker, not everything can be blamed on the government and not all government intervention in the economy is bad.The idea that the government was the savior of minorities is complete and total bullshit. Until the 60's, governments in the South did everything they could to keep blacks down, and the Federal government did nothing to help them. To blame the market for these conditions is simply false.
Were you asleep in History class? Do you even know the history of Affirmative Action? To blame the federal government is bogus. It it the White people of the US, not the US government, that is holding back minorities in this country.
Racial progress has been occuring since World War II, not the 1960s like you mistakenly claim. Harry Truman integrated the Armed Forces in the late 1940's after seeing how well Black, Chicano and Asian troops did in battle. Before this brave act by HST, minorities died defending their country were not given any respect.
As a matter of fact, a Chicano soldier from Texas who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in World War II was not allowed to be buried in his home town because the cemetery was "Whites-only". This one act galvanized the Chicano community into seeking our civil rights, which eventually led to the Chicano movement and the Raza Unida party of the 1960's.Explain to me why the McDonalds down the street from me pays a starting wage of $7/hour. The minimum wage is $5, yet they offer $2 more without a law or a union to be seen.
They are not doing it because it is the moral or ethical thing to do. I don't deny that there are economic forces at work here (if no applicants apply at $5 but lots do at $7, then the effective prevailing local minimum wage is $7), however I do think it is simplistic of you to think that all government intervention in the marketplace is bad, and I think that my examples bear me out...I dunno, I'd say we've been proven right-- one of the major causes of the high unemployment among African-Americans is that fact that the minimum wage has priced them out of the job market in many areas.
Why is it that White Libertarians and Conservatives think they know what is going on in minority communities better than the people that live there? Why is it that they give more weight to their own misguided economic theories than to the the realities faced by the people living in the ghettos and barrios of AmeriKKKa?They're not able to get a start on the job ladder because they don't have the skills necessary to earn minimum wage.
By definition, minimium wage jobs do not require much education or training, so this statement is false...It's true that few people get hired on the spot, but there *are* jobs destroyed in the long run.
Most people get hired on the spot because there happens to be an artifical labor shortage due to short-sighted immigration policies that are supposed to protect American workers, even though the American worker doesn't want that damn minimum wage job...And the impact tends to be on those least able to handle it. The minimum wage harms those at the bottom of the economic ladder for the benefit of those just above them.
Jesus dude! Do you ever put down your copy of "Libertarianism for Dummies"?
The one who is truly hurt is you because the cost of your burger just went up 50 cents. If you are honest enought to say that outright then I can respect your opinion, because you are complaining because it directly affects you in a negative manner. Just be honest enough to admit that many White people are economic racists, not "rational persons" in the economic sense...
Do you even know any people working for minimum wage? I seriously doubt it because if the difference between survival and starving is a measly two dollars, I say pay the damn two dollars to the employee. If that two dollars enables them to build a decent life (with health insurance) instead of scrabbling along from paycheck to paycheck (with no insurance) then pay the fricking two dollars. In the long run, the extra 50 cents that the burger cost me is trivial to me, however, to a low-paid person a two dollar raise is not trivial at all...
What gets my goat is that Libertarians and Conservatives come from basically the same place -- unbridled self-interest (i.e., selfishness). All the available evidence disproves your assertions yet you all blindly continue preaching the faith. At least the fools that believe in a "God" are intellectually honest to tell you that "No we can't prove that God exists, you just have to have faith".
Ask me to believe in your little religion and tell me to have faith if I don't believe, then I may work my way a little towards your viewpoint. Just don't try to use science, economics, morality or ethics to "prove" to me that you are right in believing that selfishness should be the First Commandment of our economic system, one that justifies child labor in Third World countries...

Re:Blinded by color?
Try being one of two white students in a high school classroom full of blacks and hispanics. Feel like a semester's worth of torment and being the butt of every last joke, and being afraid to retaliate?
Pussy!Racism works both ways, and there was no shortage of slurs against whites during my 9th grade year.
You know that harassment laws also protect Whites, don't you?Minorities who cry "Racism!" every time someone treats them as other than kings get no love from me because I know the vast majority of them have debased innocent white people at one time or another.
[rubs two fingers together] That is the sound of the world's smallest violin playing for you...If someone is actively being racist, yes, that needs to be stopped, but I think that minorities are using the cry of "Racism!" much like the boy who cried wolf - and sooner or later, they are going to regret saying it when it wasn't warranted instead of saving it for when it was.
So why haven't we had a minority President? Minorities vote for White candidates, why don't most Whites vote for minority candidates? Maybe because most Whites are Republicans and Republicans don't care about minorities save for the few token Blacks and Hispanics they manage to dredge up.If I ever come to power, I am going to make it my mission to utterly destroy affirmitive action and make it law that no corporation may hire anyone on any basis other than qualifications relevant to the work being done.
And who is going to judge the "qualifications"? The Whites in power, that's who!Having "quotas" that grant preference by race or gender instead of qualifications is just as evil as saying "I don't hire niggers or spicks, and a woman's place is in the kitchen."
I am wondering: were you born an idiot or did you become one later in life? Due to your flawed "reasoning" and use of unwarranted racial slurs, I think it is the latter.Affirmitive action is racism and sexism, all rolled into one.
Do you even know the history behind affirmative action? Affirmative action is about minority status. It is about ensuring equal protection under the law. It is about fairness.
You know what? Go ahead and get rid of affirmative action. In a few years we Chicanos will be the majority in many parts of the U.S. (California and Texas in particular). When we gain power due to our numbers, what is going to stop us from discriminating against your sons and daughters?
Get rid of affirmative action and the answer is NOTHING!!! Get rid of it and you are basically trading in one Master who minimally cares about you (the Whites) for another Master who doesn't give a rat's ass about you.
Keep it, and maybe you kids will have an chance to participate in a free and equal society...

Re:Blinded by color?
For whatever reasons most people working at any tech firm are going to tend to be white and male or h1b visa types. Therefore it is very easy to claim that they are behind the curve in the race area.
And it is really easy to use this as an excuse to not change the status quo, so the "good old boy" network remains in place. Companies end up hiring friends and family of their White employees, instead of looking for qualified minorities they can hire...There may or may not be more that the firms can do about this but I don't think it is really their fault.
So if companies cannot or will not do anything about discrimination and racism, then it falls to the government to do something about it, which is why the EEOC exists. If we could trust business to keep our air and water clean, then the EPA would not exist.
Where I work, I've had to go to HR. You see, our company has posters all over the place saying that they belive in employee retention and diversity. Yet, all 20 IT managers are White.
Over the last three years, I've had an exemplary record in Operations and an 3.9 GPA in my computer courses at Houston Community College. When I asked to be considered for an opening as a programmer, I was told that the position was eliminated for budget reasons.
A new PC support position was created, one that I am even more qualified for, and I was not given a chance too apply for it. A White contractor was moved to the new position so I got screwed. That is why I went to HR.
I came to find out that the position I applied for was still on the books, but the White contractor had filled it. By doing that they could eliminate the programming position and move the White guy to the new PC support position with no muss or fuss. Or so they thought.
They thought they could get away with it using sleight of hand, but I caught them with their hand in the cookie jar. Now I am waiting on HR and if they don't get off their ass soon I am going straight to the EEOC.
What could my company had done? I thought that when they looked at me and my qualifications answer would be an immediate, unqualified "Yes!". But instead I got the runaround and vague promises that they will take care of me later on.
But I am tired of waiting, which is why I took action. All I know is that no matter what happens now, I have them by their short hairs and that there will be some punitive damages involved!
As an aside, I realize that crimes differ in their severity and prosecution. People look the other way on speeding because everyone does it and police are powerless to stop it. However most people would think twice before killing a bald eagle. I happen to think that people should look at job discrimination as being closer to killing a bald eagle than speeding...

Re:Or worse...
Yup, that's why I had "who should all be trained with firearms" on there...It's always fun explaining the facts to people like el_chicano who are too busy jerking their knee to do research.
I'll give you the "unorganized" militia point (i.e., arm the the rabble, the unwashed masses that make up the U.S.). Supposedly that is so citizens can stop the Government from taking over.
Excuse me? Small arms vs Abrams tanks, Bradley APCs, F-16, bombs, missiles, nukes, etc.?
Don't give me "little Viet Nam took on and defeated the big, bad U.S.". Most "Americans" can barely lift the remote control and you expect them to move out to the woods and fight the "evil incarnate" government?
Hell, most Americans love government. They want their social security checks, interstate highways, national defense and national parks. They also know that they can't trust big business to keep the very air we breath and water we drink clean!
Anyway, why do you duck well regulated? Could it be that regulation is a governmental task, so maybe gun control is -- dare I say it -- Constitutional? :->
Who the fuck are you to give me shit when you won't even identify yourself? I am an Army veteran "trained in firearms", so I don't have take any crap from a cowardly junior member of the Kouncil of Konservative Kaucasians!!!
