Vib Ripple Shows Photographic Memory Skills
Thanks to IGN PS2 for its hands-on analysis of Japanese PlayStation 2 title Vib Ripple, the latest in the series from cult developer NanaOn-Sha, creators of Parappa The Rapper and Vib Ribbon. According to the article, "Stages take place in square arenas, with a center 'mat' that's textured with a picture. Your goal is to find all the Peta Characters hidden in the picture... [you must] search for a clump of color in the picture corresponding to the size and color indicated in the [Peta] character's icon [on the side of the screen]." It's also explained: "By connecting a digital camera to your PlayStation 2, you can use personal pictures as the basis for new stages. The game automatically places Peta Characters appropriately about the picture." 1UP has an earlier preview of this title, which is out now in Japan (with Western release as yet unconfirmed), and was previously mentioned on Slashdot Games. -
Parappa Creator Debuts New Title, To Be Honored At GDC
Thanks to Game Science for its article revealing the first visuals of Parappa The Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura's new title, Vib Ripple. An earlier post at Game Science has further details, mentioning "'Vib Ripple' is a similar style of game to [PlayStation 1 title] 'Vib Ribbon' but with different content. The player takes control of Vibri with a photograph as the game field, and must jump at designated points to free characters from the field. The game can use photographs taken from your mobile phone or digital camera via the USB port." Elsewhere, Matsuura is to be honored at the Game Developer's Choice Awards at GDC in San Jose, receiving the oddly named First Penguin Award, "acknowledging developers who have taken risks to break new ground." -
Mojib Ribbon Game Promises Musical Spam
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to a Gamers.com report discussing the bizarre Japanese PlayStation 2 game, Mojib Ribbon, from the creators of Parappa The Rapper and this title's cult prequel, Vib Ribbon. The article says, "Like its predecessor, [Mojib Ribbon] ..is a simple rhythm game, but ..the game takes any text file and converts it into a Parappa-style rap, which players must then follow through stick inputs." Furthermore, the game uses the network adaptor and "..lets players send game data back and forth between each other. Players could e-mail especially inspiring raps to each other, or simply use their morning spam to generate a new game challenge." There's more info available via a preview at The GIA and pictures from this year's GDC.
