Not a good idea if you are using a cable modem, DSL, dialup, or other unreliable connection. If your DNS is up but your mail exchanger is down, the remote (sending) host will queue your mail but if you nameserver is down, it will most likely be bounced immediately.

It actually can work quite fine. I have a DSL line, my own DNS server and a few other services running. My ISP VISI provides secondary name services for me.

Some ISP's (like my own - Twin Cities) are pretty decent about rates for static IP's, and just about every DSL account has one. For $20/mo. over their $22 272k/640k service, you can have up to eight IP addresses, 5 usable because it is not bridged.

The required equipment (a Cisco 675 DSL router) cost $50 when I signed up with the former U S West, plus the $75 setup fee. However, thanks to the suggestion of my ISP, I was able to get an Intel 10/100 NIC for free by saying that I didn't have one, and I got a $100 rebate a few months later. $25 for a DSL router with firewalling and a $40 NIC is a GOOD deal.

My net cost per month is ~$65 -- $30 to Qwest, and the amortized cost of ISP service is something like $35 after a subscription discount. Sure, it might be a little spendy, but with the quality of service I get, I most definitely would say that I am FAR from being sodomized.

Oh, but it's sooo tempting to get a hookup from these guys. It's only one static IP, but ooohhh... 1.5Mbit for $90/mo. doesn't seem too outrageous, and their backbone is every bit as good as the one I use right now.

The first batch of people to get DSL hooked up got 640kbps down and 272kbps up. That only lasted a few months and then everybody getting hooked up after that got a smaller download number (256 or 512), while leaving the first people at 640. A month or three ago USWest upped the line speed to 640 for everybody.

Of course, that's just the line speed; you might get throttled at your ISP.

I wouldn't use USWest as an ISP unless they were the only one available. VISI kicks ass.

Where, TIGER Line Data, but first look at Bruce's free software page. The map data is 2.6GBytes at 90% compression. Download the manual first, then and only if you are really going to do mapping software get the data. Better yet only get the data for one state and work with it first. I've been working with a small subset and using a 30GByte scratch space that feels a bit tight. My goal is to reduce it to CD-ROM size but still have a useable data set. Unfortunately I stalled out awhile back on it. I do have a mostly correct set of DB file table and appendix data entered. The errors are easy to spot, I just forgot where they were so the files aren't corrected. Once my life becomes stable again I plan on working on the size reduction again. Disk space was one of the factors that stalled me out.

That's completely untrue. I live in Minneapolis, and I have a HUGE variety of DSL choices (Time Warner doesn't have Internet ready cable yet).

You can get DSL service from the Incumbent LEC (Local Exchange Carrier), USWest... erm, Qwest, as well as from Competitive LEC's such as Covad NorthPoint, or Rhythms.

Separately, you have a choice of ISP. IMO, there are only two choices. VISI has really good deals on multiple static IP's, but can't compete with Onvoy performance wise, because the former uses expensive Qwest (got it right that time) DSL, while the latter uses Covad.

Of course, there are dozens of different ISP options. Some are overpriced, some offer better speed, some offer better features... it's truly a competitive market out there.

Almost everyone I have talked to about their DSL service agrees: use the phone company for the line and a high-end, local ISP for service. I chose to use USWest (the local provider in Minneapolis) to give me the line, and visi as my ISP. They have a great reputation for technical excellence and quality customer service. I have had only one outage, and the ISP called me before I even knew about the outage, just to let me know. I have had several friends who have had severe problems when their ISP is also the phone company. Mostly it amounted to overbilling, but I've also heard about major, long-term outages, outages of some services (POP and SMTP), and a lack of cool services (like the static IP my ISP throws in for free). It may just amount to my experiences, the experiences of those around me, and a general disorganization at USWest, but it seems like the formula works pretty well. I've been told by a couple of people that the nationals (concentric, flashcom) are kind of hard to deal with because they're very large and have to deal with multiple companies to complete service, but I've also heard that Covad rocks.

People who have been in my apartment wonder why there is a carpet square between my A/V stack and coffee table. It's to cover the power and network lines. For those interested, my firewall box and web server reside in the A/V stack along with the TV, VCR and the stereo components. Maby I should start calling it my A/V/D (Audio / Video / Data) stack.

This is extreemly important. I have so many tools on my resume because I was always been willing to say, shure I'll try, learn, and do it. It sure helps that I bothered to learn the fundamental computer science theories and am willing to learn more.

My own technical book collection is now a couple of shelves larger than the 4 foot wide floor to ceiling book case I originally allocated for it. Sure some of the books are now old and dusty, but then I've been collecting for 2 decades. The dustier ones will soon be cataloged evicted to boxes till I get a larger place. Sure it's expensive to maintain your own persomal technical library, but I've found it indespensible. I use books as refferences nearly daily. I consider it much more important to know how to research and look up something than it is to know it off the top of the head. More often than not the memory isn't quite all there, but you know that printed page ratains what it was told very faithfully. It's also much easier to hand to somebody else so you can off load the task and get on to some more important task.

I keep the HTML in it and my web site simple as it is there for information transfer, not glitz. If someone needs it in text format I will transfer it over to text buy having Lynx translate it. The resume is currently in flux as I'm updating it for a new job search. I'm looking for a place that will allow me to only work 30 hours a week preferably in web security or programming.

On my main system I use a 90mm fan infront of my hard disks. It also blows out. I really need a larger case as I've maxed out HD slots. Initialy I used cable ties to mount the fan to the HD holding bracktes. I later switched to a piece of cardboard cut to fill in the opening around the fan. I use screws to hold the cardboard to the front of the fan. The fan is now held in place by the cardboard only. When cutting the cardboard I sized it a little tight, and just jammed it in place. It provides a better air seal this way. I placed a couple of images on my web server. Fan and cardboard mounted, and fan and cardboard from back side showing harddisks behind.

Temporary restraining order DENIED!

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Seams like a place to ask. I'm trying to track down details on the Mini PCI spec from PCI SIG. I just need gross details like size of board, connector used, etc. It's a spec to make daughter cards for laptops to a common standard so each manufacturer donsen't need their own format. Email me with them. I want this because over the weekend I came up with the idea of standard for motherboards and expansion cards for wearable computers. Wearable Board Standard My document sofar is rather slim, but it's a start with a bunch of ideas that all seam well founded.

I have a webpage with some of my thoughts on this.

At one time, Multitech made modems that understood the UUCP G protocol, which is an XMODEM like response for every packet protocol. Multitechs would recognize when a UUCP conversation was happening, and start sending response packets back to the server, knowing that the modem's error correction would ensure the packet would be delivered reliably. This improved things dramatically because you only had the latency induced by your serial link, and not the communication over the phone lines, and the other computer's serial link.

Something similar could be done with PPP. In fact, I bet the PPP headers could even be stripped off by one modem and added back in by the other. Also, once USB modems start happening, the latency induced by serial communications will be cut dramatically.

My only worry is that a lot of modem software expects to talk to serial hardware, and so USB modems won't be as popular as they should be for this reason.

I'm the network programmer on Battlezone II [see the Official site here ], and we're using such a setup. It looks as if at least one other game is using a similar method; see here also.

Only user inputs are sent around in BZ2, and used by every machine in the game to compute a new gamestate; if a client disagrees with the server, we can either shove a correct gamestate do that client, or kick them out. While traditional lockstep methods do have smoothness problems due to unpredictable transmission delays over the internet, on BZ2, we developed an interesting solution which we call 'Multiworld' -- sorry I can't say much more than that.

Even with synchronization, there still are client-side hacks that can be used-- people changing texture maps to show enemies more clearly, perfect radar hacks, and more. Even if everything's checksummed up the wazoo and that "works" (hah), a hacked driver can do fun stuff with texturemaps, or more.

This all points to one fundamental problem in computer security: on a system, there is at least one user (and/or process) that can read another processes's memory. Just that abiity is enough to develop cheats. [See: perfect radar above.] Unix's root account can do that, so it's really no better in terms of trust than Win95/98.

Fully stopping cheating is a problem not in computer science. It's a problem in humanity-- we're buggy to the core.

Lego Mindstorms is only some assembly required. I'm personally working on the "all assembly required" version of robotics. For a beginner, Lego Mindstorms is great. I'm even considering getting a set or two for myself. For some of us nuts it's a little low in the programibility and speed area.

Others who are doing robotics can be found via searches, or by following the links on most robotics clubs pages. I'm directly involved with Twin Cities Robotics. There are a bunch of others around the country, Portland Area Robotics (PARTS), Seattle Robotics Society (SRS), Triangle Amateur Robotics, Dallas Personal Robotics Group, Central Illinois Robot Club, Home Brew Robotics, and San Francisco Robotics Society of America to name a few.

If you as an american citizen value your freedom and privacy, contact your federal, state and local government representatives and let them know. Ask them to make it illegal to create national databases of biometric information. Make the federal government go to the states and beg for information. If the fed has to go to the state, that it a good thing, because you will have more control over your state politicians. Go to the Center for Democract and Technology and similar organizations and find out what you can do to stop the federal government's grab for power. Only YOU can change the tide of the governments attempt to control you, and YOU had better START NOW.

Projects like GNOME and KDE, and now LUIGUI -- efforts to make Linux 'usable' -- ultimately have the wrong idea. As other people have pointed out, Unix is already very usable. The problem is that it's not learnable. The CLI is extremely powerful, yet impossible to learn by guessing and experimenting (it's not 'intuitive'). You have to read most of Unix for the Imaptient or some similar 700-page volume before you can begin. But once you're ready, the power is there.

I think (hope) the WIMP (windows, menus, icons and pointers) paradigm has seen its last days. Something completely new needs to spring up. The best a WIMP project like KDE or GNOME can do is to be pale imitation of the Macintosh. This is not to disparage the very good work being done by the GNOME and KDE developers! It's just that the metaphors and self-contained applications way of designing interfaces needs to die. It's become more a barrier than a path to effective computer use.

The book About Face: The Essentials of user interface design by Alan Cooper, while mostly a WIMP style guide, has a few revolutionary ideas in it (get rid of filesystems as an interface element (PalmPilot!), inherent document management and revision control, et c.). I would suggest that everyone interested in UI design read it. (Judging by a lot of the crap that's out there now -- commercial and free -- people really need Cooper's advice. :\)

One of the things I am working on is a formalism for a non-hierarchical ('super-hierarchical') namespace, something that I think could be a powerful element of UIs of the future.
