No, MS is going after VistA, Google is drafting
No, MS is simply going after VistA. Now that the MS marketing engine has had a year to Google-bomb them out of existence. After all, if it doesn't exist in Google then it's not on the net, right?
With somewhat more than a year of MS' loyal media outlets yammering about MS Windows Vista and 'turfers and Gold Partners setting up blogs and fake websites about MS Windows Vista, the real VistA should be long gone from even the caches. Don't even get me started on the corporate PR playground that is Wikipedia.
So now, when administrators decide to investigate what's the most widely used medial record system, they won't likely find it on the net. Nor will they find out that it is modular, standards, based and like most software, VistA is Open Source *.
(OK, technically it's public domain, but you do get the source under a Crowley-style license as a result.)

VistaI just tried to explain this whole issue to someone and I tripped over the OO thing four times! Calling it Office Open XML was a brilliant move by MS, I have to give them that. Google used to give very different results for Vista until last year. Now the open source system probably doesn't even make page 20 of the search results.

A previous article...
There is a Computerworld article from the previous slashdot story that seems pretty helpful in understanding the meltdown of their electronic medical records systems. They say that they are running the world's largest Citrix server system, and it does not scale well for their purposes.
As someone who has been frustrated by a variety of Electronic Medical Records systems in different medical settings, I must say that my "favorite" has been VistA (the medical records software used by the Veteran's Administration, and no relation to Microsoft Vista). Currently, I'm using GE's Centricity at my work site and have had some minor problems that have resulted in delays in entering my data. (Problems with VistA were more related to the entire network being down - problems with Centricty have been with database connectivity... I wish I could say more about it, but I'm not an IT person, I'm just a lowly end-user). -
Re:If this was developed with public money...Why isn't the software that manages your medical history public domain, given that the public healthcare system funded it.
...Actually it already is public domain (warning for PDF). Or which countries where you talking about? If you don't have it, you can download it and set it up.

VistA FTW!
Why the hell wouldn't they just use VistA CPRS instead of jacking off to the tune of 4 BILLION DOLLARS?!?!?!?!?

Interesting question
Vista is also the name of a healthcare CPRS specialized OS developed in 1968 by the US government and released under FOIA (and later FOSS). http://www.vistasoftware.org/ It has been in continuous use since then in every VA hospital and most hospitals in other countries. It is also an integral part of the National Health Information Infrastructure, a ten year project to modernize our healthcare system.
Question: is Microsoft liable for any damages resulting from the use of Microsoft Vista and the CPRS VistA? After all, they would be implying a relationship by the similarity of the names.
Question: If you google Microsoft and Vista Software Alliance, you find a rather interesting adversarial relationship between the two organizations, notwithstanding that Novell is one of the Corporate Members and derives significant revenue from VSA Vista. Does this violate any of Microsofts antitrust agreements?
Question: VSA Vista is a healtcare product, whose advertising is regulated under the healtcare laws. That included generics, substitutables and soundalikes. Does the mere addition of a corporate name (like Microsoft) free Microsoft Vista from regulation under the healthcare advertising laws, since Microsoft Vista is capable of substituting for VSA Vista as a CPRS system?

The name Vista is already taken
Why is it that Microsoft thinks it can use the name VISTA ? It is already used by one of the more significant open source projects. It may be that not everyone knows about Vista.. http://www.vistasoftware.org/
I would say that the name is already in use.
Thanks,
