Longhorn's Offical Name is Windows Vista

The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year."

Despite all the disspointing announcements lately about features being dropped from Longhorn, at least it still had a cool name. Now that's gone too.
I don't like that name. I think Longhorn is far better.

..they dared not name it after a year. That would have been like 3drealms naming Duke Nukem 1998 instead of Duke Nukem forever.
The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year.
And why is that, exactly? Couldn't it be that they made up many names, selected, say, 10, and registered the domain names to prevent leaking of the name and it being registered by someone else ?
Sounds like a very small price for such a big risk, so I don't see any reason why registration in March should indicate that they actually decided to go with that name at that date...

Pardon my ignorance, but could someone tell me what Vista means and how Microsoft relates it to their new OS? NT was New Technology I believe, and that was fitting (well, when it was released anyway) and XP stood for experience (yea, it's some experience alright...) so what's the correlation this time?
According to the article, 'The word 'vista' defined means "pleasing view."'. That is not correct. Vista simply means "view" or "sight" and could apply to good or bad, pleasing or displeasing. It remains to be seen which it turns out to be...

It seems odd that Microsoft are sticking to their decision to abandon year references in their product names (well, excluding the miserable sales-pitch that was Windows 2003). I think they'll lose upgrades over this--not everyone knows that Windows Vista is better than XP (Vista implies a hands-off approach, XP implies that you're part of an experience), but everyone knows that Windows 98 is better than 95, simply because of mandatory obsolescence enforced by the naming scheme.

one of the things they're waiting for...is a platform. AMD is solid and at 64 bit, but Intel is MS's ol' buddy. Longhorn was already supposed to be out by now, but...Intel doesn't have a good enough 64bit platform to offer it. That's the wait.

Why is Microsoft wasting time and money chosing such a crappy name while Windows 2006 (or Windows NT 6.0) should fit great and would't cause any trademark issue ?

Somehow, Vista doesn't seem to be, as Bill Gates once said, the the most important release since Windows 95. Let's hope Vista is more than a new color scheme and fancy GUI components.

Things work quite well. All the apps work, I can develop with Eclipse, JBoss, and MySQL.
User switching is nice, so my wife can have her own email/office environment.
I rarely have to reboot the machine due to problems.

(A) Windows already supports x86-64, and there's a current product called Windows XP x64.
(B) x86-64 is designed to not be a break with previous x86 systems
(C) Would be confused with "Win64", the API brand name that will outlive this OS by many years.

Does it really matter what moronic name it has? Thinking back the "commoon" name has always been just Windows among the masses. People that want to seem competent will append numbers (95, 98, 2000) or say Win XP but few others care.

For the simple reason it is fast becoming one of the most popular embedded OS's thanks to it implementations with TomTom's GO GPS product., which over here in the UK is soaring in popularity. I remember when LongHorn went into a major beta and the illegal versions went around my college campus, this was over 2 years ago, and then the first leaks happened 4 years ago. At least I hope that means that beta testing is taking a good amount of time. But if some reports are right, (And there's no reason to doubt them) they are also adding more needless features or extra security to deprive us of digital freedom.
Of course let's all take a moment to remember Windows ME, the last time Microsoft tried to force a specific feature on us. I know personally I'm not upgrade, and likely most offices won't as XP is working fine... for now.
Way to go, MS. The US gov't owns a bit of medical software (DMR) called Vista (developed in open source for those playing at home) which they are distributing to all medical practices for FREE starting in August. Let the chaos begin...

Albeit it has been noted that "vista" has a meaning as an English word (my choice is Volunteers In Service To America) it actually means a lot of things in Spanish and has a very strong Spanish feeling in it.
I've been intrigued for a while for the increasing use of Spanish words in every day speek. Is MS name choice a deliberate attempt to make windows cooler? (well, obviously that is what all the branding thing is about but I meant asking, is there a coolness factor associated with Spanish or Latino things?). Are they trying to be sexier for Spanish speakers? Or is just because how it sounds?

All that registering the domain in late March tells you is that the name was considered a possibility at that time, not that a final decision had been made to use it. I wouldn't be surprised if they tossed around several names and registered all of them as soon as they thought of them.

Why bother renaming it at all? We've all been calling it Longhorn for years now... it's not like Chicago, where that was an internal name that wasn't often used outside of Redmond. Longhorn this and Longhorn that have been the standard phrases for years in every trade rag... and they're throwing it all away to call it "Vista"... eeeyyyuuuuchhh...
The only possible reason I can think of for it is that they think Longhorn is associated with too much bad publicity, and they want a fresh start. Except, I haven't seen that much "bad" said about Longhorn... so, I guess Bill was bored recently, and decided to let his youngest name the new OS.

There's a story this morning about how today in Atlanta there's an event called "MGB 2005" with the tagline "Going Beyond," that features several major tracks being presented to Microsoft managers and partners from throughout the world. But apparently the name "Microsoft" is not in evidence on any of the event's signage or collateral relating to the meeting. Anyone know what the exact scoop is on that? Is this where the "Vista" name was cooked up?

A few years ago, "Vista" was actually one of the proposed new titles for a corporate intranet site I was working on. It came from a committee of middle managers. We shot it down because it didn't mean much, didn't communicate anything about the site it would've been attached to, and wasn't easily "branded" into variations on the theme. (Tiny symbols to remind people of the "vista" didn't come to mind for the end of articles, for one example. No space-efficient "Vista" logo elements.) The idea of providing a way to see the overall "landscape" of the company was the idea, but that struck us as so generic to Web sites generally that we thought it wasn't useful.
(But then, really, "Panther" and "Tiger" are just cool names according to Steve J's 12-year-old self... Easier to brand, with fur coat patterns and so on, but no more meaningful.)

"Nova" is not a common spanish word. You probably thought of "nueva". In spanish "nova" is an astronomical word meaning an exploding star (as in English). "No va", on the other hand means "doesn't move" to any spanish speaker. Also, native spanish speakers leave precious little space between words.
Actually, the equivalent situation is more like a car named a "nogo", where (I made the following up) a nogo is a English word of Hebrew origins describing a small lump of hardened flesh occuring in your left deltoid.

Microsoft's only possible approach is to make Windows Vista good enough that people feel they want to upgrade and no better. How do they justify to their shareholders that they spent X million dollars on this feature and they didn't really need to and that they'll need to spend Y million more on a new feature they haven't thought of for the next release. That's risky and expensive.
They can leverage their monopoly position and only add just enough new features to excuse a new release and they'd be foolish to do otherwise.
It's no coincidence that the major new feature of Vista is a display model just like Apple's.

I don't know, I think the Preditor Cat theme is a powerful one. It is something that we can all envision the same (when a person says "Tiger" we see a similar image in our mind's eye. When someone says "Vista", it coudl be anything). Further, we have seen many of these animals in teh zoo as a kid on on Discovery Chanel. They are powerful. They are fast. They are to be reconed with. The Lion is the king of the beasts. (don't think Lion won't be an OS X version one day).

think about it. A jump forward in OS effectiveness could happen, as it did with the switch from command line to 2D GUI. They still have the same colors (of course) and general shape, but as opposed to the XP logo, where it's shaded normally, the logo for Vista as drawn as if there's a light shining on the center. Indeed, there's a circle of lightness focused directly on the center, and the outside is darker, as if there was a spotlight shining on it. This, of course, is exactly what Apple did a few months ago with the Tiger logo, because of Spotlight being its major feature...

Considering microsoft tortured Lindows and forced them to change a name that only a pinhead would confuse with a piece of junk like windows, you would think they would have investigated the name first.
There is already a virtual operating system product called SVISTA. http://www.serenityvirtual.com/index.php Gee just one letter difference. Maybe its worth a few hundred million dollars to the company that has been using that name for a couple years now.
Maybe people should chip in to a legal fund so Serenity Systems can sue Microsoft? Truly would be poetic justice.
