Re:Yes, it's legal
This reminds me of vPod. It's licensed under the FreeBSD, but you can't get access to the source unless you give him a $10 donation. It's like open source, without actually giving out the source.

Re:Could be good news for BSD projects
To further illustrate your point, let's just imagine that Linux was under a BSD license. Then, when some router manufacturer used that code in their router, the end user wouldn't obtain the source, and wouldn't be a able to freely modify the router to do what you want. With BSD you aren't garaunteeing that the source will always be available for the user to modify, fix, or extend. The GPL provides this, ensuring that something released as free, stays open, so that whoever uses the code has access to the source. I've even seen certain projects, which are licensed under BSD where the author wouldn't release the source to you unless you gave a $10 donation. Although I'm aware that the GPL has wording that allows them to charge for the cost of distribution of the source, I don't think I've ever seen a GPL application require that you pay them for the ability to download the software, and certainly not one who's compiled binary fits in 219 KB.

Absolutely ways around that...Tidal Flame said:
There are a number of ways around this. You're right, it's annoying for the average user, but not so annoying that it offsets all the benefits of iPod + iTunes.
I agree 100%. There are (for Windows) ways around it (for Mac), and I personnally don't think they are that annoying at all. (Disclaimer: I have really only used Senuti on a Mac)Just copy those to your iPod and feel free to share Music with your friends if you are so inclined. Actually, I found a better piece of Windows freeware (well, maybe better...I have never used vPod), but VersionTracker is being slow for me at the moment, so I can't find it.

Re:Maybe
Making it so that the iPod will ONLY play music loaded onto it via iTunes frustrates me and makes me feel restricted, like they want me to ONLY use it the way they want me to.
There are a number of utilities that allow you to transfer music to your iPod from Windows without iTunes. One opensource application is vPod. You can also try XPlay from MediaFour. -
Re:honestly
Not true. There were and are tons of alternatives to Music Match on Windows.
My very own vPod is one of them. -
SecureIMSecureIM has been around for a while now. It basically acts as a proxy and you set your Aim to connect through it. Inside the proxy it encrypts everything with 256bit blowfish, then on the receiver's end reverses the process. The result is transparent encryption with the standard Aim client.
It's easy to install but since both parties need to have it running can be tricky trying to get non-geeks to understand why they should install it.
I used it for a while with the few(2) friends I could convince to run it but then kind of forgot about it...

My solution to AIM monitoring...
For the past few weeks I have been writing a program I currently call SecureIM. It is a encrypting proxy server that runs on your computer and allows you to have secure conversations over AIM. It's runs under Win32 and is tested with AIM 4.x and higher and Trillian.
If you would like to check out the beta version, it's available at http://www.vonnieda.org/SecureIM
The program will be getting a name change before v1.0 since there are several SecureIMs out there.
Before you flame me about security or what not, please at least have a read of the Readme.txt file where I think I explain pretty well what SecureIM is and isn't capable of.
I hope someone finds some use of it. Enjoy :) -

TurtleBeach AudioTron
A few other people have mentioned it but I will too. I have a Turtle Beach AudioTron and it totally kicks ass.
As far as features go, it's fairly basic. It plays MP3 and MP3 streams using SMB over Ethernet or phone LAN (whatever that is called). It has a good front panel and remote and a very good web interface.
I've had mine for a bit less than a year and it's been one of my favorite purchases since the day I got it.
If you get (or have) one and use Windows, also check out a little system tray app I wrote called ATTray which makes it quick to control the AT from your computer.
