Re:Socialists?
I guess there already is a Socialist Party.
-
Bah! At least you get choice
At least you get five choices taken semi-seriously. The states, only two parties get taken very seriously, which is ironic considering they're the two joke choices. One party with no stand on the issues whatsoever, exactly like the major opposing party but makes a feeble effort to do the right thing; and another party that still thinks we're in the early 1900s and sells out shamelessly to the highest bidder. Americans: Vote Walt Brown for President in '04.

Re:Gerrymandering not completely evilNo, the logical opposite of gerrymandering would be a system of multi-member districts that eliminates the need to draw district boundaries, and the opportunity to grab power by tampering with the map.
A sensible system of electing representatives would use proportional representation to fill many legislative seats from a relatively large geographic area. E.g., if the Republicans have 51% of the electorate, they should have 51% of the legislature---not 100% because they just squeaked by in every district. This is more fair both to major parties, and to minor parties that are currently squeezed out completely.
There are working models of voting systems that ensure PR, such as the Hare system of Single Transferable Vote. You won't find support for PR in the Democratic or Republican parties, but the Socialist Party USA, among other minor parties, has supported PR and opposed gerrymandering for years.

Re:My Letter to Senator McCain
I personally am very much against the war on drugs. I agree with you 110 percent.
:)
Politically, I consider myself a liberal socio-anarchist (see "David McReynolds voter")
But I'm not about to say that in a letter to McCain, for obvious reasons. -
No money involvedThe money I spend is entirely hardware based.
The distro part's easy:

/root/upgrade
apt-get update
apt-get -y -u dist-upgrade &&
apt-get clean

Re:New names for Intel...Actually, the names for recent Intel chips are from locations within a short trip on Tri-Met or a short drive from thier Hillsboro, OR facilities, where they do pretty close to everything.
Tualitin is the name of the plains Hillsboro sits on, as well as a city south of Portland.
Williamette is the name of the river running through Portland, as well as the region overall (Williamette Valley).
More likely, Intel will name new stuff things like Boring, Portland, Forest Grove, Tigard, Beaverton, Columbia, Hood, or other locale names...

Why offline? In Oregon, we have had low voter turnout in recent years simply because we've had this odd phenomenon of having major storms too dangerous to go out for anything not critical to survival in. We had a lot of really bad laws because the far right wing seems to to put voting over thier lives a bit and take advantage of low turnout. So, to even the playing field a bit, Oregon did one thing that no state had thought to do before: We abolished the voting booth. I can't remember if it's just a law or unconstitutional in Oregon, but the polling place is a thing of the past. All elections are by mail. You have no option to walk to a polling place.

Distinctive ring modemsOK, now I have to wonder if there's a list of modems with this distinctive ring feature someplace?

Re:cable experiencesOK, the upload cap, price hike and lack of node split are all AT&T's problem, not @Home in this case. Please bitch at your closest AT&T rep.

Re:It doesn't matter - FREE CABLE INTERNETChanging your Ethernet MAC won't do jack shit. Won't even make you hard to identify. Why? It's your modem's serial number, make and model that authenticates your connection to the headend. My guess is billing forgot to hit "disable modem." Basically, if they split the node, they'll notice your modem, go "Wait, why is this enabled?" and you get disconnected.
Also, @Home isn't who's answering the phones when you first call in. That's your local cable company. Care to post the name of the cable company in need of the smackdown?

Re:AT&T@Home vs Comcast@HomeBeing at the tier 2 tech support, I hate having to deal with the flak that the tier 1 customer service guys end up passing us via the customer because they think they're a tech. The DHCP lease on @home is a week, and the LDAP server forgets about you and needs to be repushed if you don't grab your lease after a month. You can still connect if you know your IP number... Generally speaking, cable networks suffer far less from the "shared line problem" than does DSL, it's just marketing fud.

Re:AT&T@Home vs Comcast@HomeFind out what DHCP is serving as your IP. That's your static IP. Seriously.
It is subject to change in the event that they need to network restructuring to allow for high loads, this is *not* recommended in the bay area including Sacramento.

Re:It doesn't matter@home hasn't raised it's rates as long as I've worked for them. AT&T raised it's rates $5.

Re:It doesn't matterAdd tax to that, and I bet it comes out to $42 and change.

Re:It doesn't matterYou're lucky. Most AT&T customers are paying $52 after tax right now.

Re:It doesn't matterAT&T has the highest rates anywhere in the @home network. If Comcast buys them out, they'll likely reduce price to stay competitve against the budget DSL providers like Verizon, which AT&T stopped being after thier last rate increase. It apparently wasn't a wise decision, AT&T calls used to have the plurality, now Comcast calls outnumber them close to 2:1 just on rough guesstimate on what I get.

It doesn't matterThey both get thier bandwidth primarily from @home. Thier tech support is provided by @home, and having answered the phone as both Comcast@home and AT&T@home several times today, I can safely say the tech support's the same. What does this mean for the customer? AT&T customer's rates will likely go down.

Re:Vote. I don't care for who, just vote.
The Socialist Party is also running a candidate, but I couldn't find a good link.
-
You know the old saying....................
If voting could change anything, it would be illegal...........
Just remember who actually runs this country - it's not the people we elect, at least on a national level. We're "given" the opportunity to vote every once in a while to at least have the sense of making a difference, but believe me, if the masses could actually wrest power from those who have it simply by voting, well, we'd quickly lose our right.
So go out and vote nationally, but make sure that you actually are informed of your local issues, ones that can make a difference to you and your community.
And if you want real change, it has to start from below, from your neighborhood. You can never expect or hope for real progress from those in power.
So, yeah, I'm voting for what I believe in nationally. I know it won't make an inkling of a difference in the outcome (most likely a Gore victory) but at least I will have kept my conscience.

Re:My ballot doesn't list several of these candidaYeah not every candidate is on the ticket in every state. Some candidates are write in only. Others just aren't included in that states elections. For instance look at: The Socialist Parties page
They aren't on the ballot in every state. Thats just the way our democratic system works. Those candidates didn't have enough support to get onto the ballot in some states and they did in others.Still our political system seems to work pretty well. Debates with more than 2 candidates would be nice though.

Just Vote!I'm seeing a lot of people saying "this person lied" or "that person exaggerated." You know what? I don't care. I do care that you get out there and vote for who you like be it Bush/Gore or a third party candidate, Nader,McReynolds, or even Buchanan.
Vote for who you like, just vote.
If you aren't yet registered, you can go do that here.
Your vote does matter.

Universal Healthcare/Social Security BAD!
That's what Harry Browne stands for, eliminating social programs and social progress. Remember one of the individuals who will be suddenly empowered will be corporations. Think big-business is out of control now, wait till Browne gets his turn in office. Make no mistake about it, Libertarianism is the new Republicanism, just less Jesus. Just look at his views on abortion. He should just become Buchanan's VP.
Back to the real issue, the problem is in a debate when one person says something especially stupid (anti-net propaganda) its the other person's job to jump right on it. But Gore just smiled showing agreement. If this isn't the best reason to open up the debates to third party candidates I don't know what is. Toss the Lib, Green, and the Socialist and we'll have a real debate.
Info on 3rd party candidates can be found here:
Nader
Browne
McReynolds
Buchanan
Read up before you vote, please. show is hardly a place to find facts.

Ralph Nader for PresidentConsumer Advocate Ralph Nader is running for president. He has been largely ignored by the mainstream media, even though his views are fairly mainstream (a wee bit to the left of Bill Bradley...). CNN interviewed Pat Buchannon, who is more extreme to the right wing than Nader is to the left, but the mainstream media works with the establishment to keep outsiders out. Thats why only a Democrat or Republican will ever be president.
Slashdot could work to change this... in a big way. If we unite as a force of change, it may be possible to introduce some diversity into the presidential race. Slashdot as a whole should endorse a candidate (decided by the slashdot poll), which everyone on Slashdot will work to get elected. Obviously we would become one of those special interest groups, but one which is composed of individuals who all have a say in the collective policies that we support.
Slashdot polls on all the major issues, and with our sheer numbers, we would be able to influence the campaign platform of our selected candidate. I put forward the name of Ralph Nader only because he happens to be the candidate that I support, but it could just as easily be David McReynolds, or anyone, other than Bush or Gore.
The best way to determine who your views are most in line with is at the Presidential Candidate Selector: http://www.selectsmart.com/PRESIDENT/
