Why is this an either/or question?
Do both! There's no reason you can't split the signal and encode to every popular format at once. If someone has trouble getting their favorite client working, they can try another one.
My favorite radio station webcasts in Real, WMA, and two bitrates of MP3 simultaneously. You'd do well to follow that lead. -
Most folks here probably do.
Seriously! Where do you think the DVD-CCA gets their funding? From that LOTR box set you had to have! If you think what happened to Jon was wrong, stop throwing money at the machine that made it happen. Is hollywood's entertainment worth the society it creates?
This is why I've never purchased a DVD with CCS or region coding, and don't plan to ever do so. (They're a great way to store data.) If you can't kick the DVD habit, at least give a few bucks to the EFF each time you indulge.
How about the RIAA? Find some indie bands who don't feed the monster. I've discovered that small concerts (under 500 people are so) are not only more fun than 10,000 idiots in a sports arena, but the small venues generally have better acoustics.
Maybe your niece really wants the latest teen pop CD for x-mas. Fine, but bundle it with some weird cool music. You never know what might happen.
As for Clear Channel, what radio stations do you listen to? They sell your ear-time. Stop buying from their advertisers if you can help it. Discover the kickass late-night program on the local station.
As for the BSA and Microsoft, I'm sure we all understand the basics here, but seriously consider it. Are you supporting the noncommercial projects you value? Have your contributions this year outweighed that XP license your uncle bought? -
more crap, just like the old crap

Re:The problem is twofold
Where did all the Bob Dylans go, the Janis Joplins, the Stevie Ray Vaughns and B.B. Kings?
they were replaced with the jack johnsons, ben harpers, and wilcos.
admittedly i'm a bit spoiled with good public radio in detroit, but it's out there.
agreed though, i will typically download a song or 2 then go buy the album. -
Go NPR
Go here for the best live stream of a great NPR radio station. Great music variety throughout the day:
WDET
enjoy! I know i do. -
Check out WDET
WDET is Detroit's public station that has been playing an eclectic mix of music for years. Way back when, they we're playing the "Talking Heads" before any of the commercial stations even noticed. The hosts are knowledgeable about the music and provide insight and bios. They stream their content and have playlist archives at: wdetfm.org . Happy listening.

Re:Sometimes the old ways are effective
Try turning on the radio (i.e. the one that uses radio wave frequencies, not IP addresses) and find a not for profit station.
Damn... I already replied to another post so I can't mod you up... so I can only reply with a big Right On! (Yep... I'm that old ;-)
We have an NPR affiliate WDET here in Detroit which is the only station I listen to. You can listen to it with Chaincast, Quicktime, Realmedia or direct link in WMP. I've often said to people when they comment on the song currently playing, "Wait an hour, the sound will be completely different." When I heard a rap song one day I knew I had heard every type of music there is on one radio station.
I lose sleep listening to Liz Copeland's show from midnight to 5, she almost always plays great music that I've mostly haven't heard before.
There's news and talk from 5am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm, then there's jazz from 7pm to 10pm (these are all weekdays... weekends have different schedules) and the rest of the time it's whatever the DJ (host) feels like playing. Yes, this is a DJ programmed station.
I know I'm running on, but I just really like this station.

This could open alot of eyes...
For people here in the US who do not have a top notch radio station (in Detroit we have WDET) in their area, this could be a Good Thing. After I stopped listening to commercial radio a few years ago, my CD collection has become increasingly more diverse. I'd say that probably 50-60% of my CD purchases in the past few years were directly related to things I heard on WDET; music you would never hear on commercial radio.
I'm hoping that this takes off. Maybe it will serve, (as ESPN once did for sports -- before it became pop culture), as a showcase for the other side of music. There is so much excellent music floating around that many people never get a chance to hear. -
