What about WebRTC?
(already mentioned above by some anonymous cowards)

WebRTC turns 5
https://webrtc.org/ "WebRTC is a free, open project that provides browsers and mobile applications with Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities via simple APIs. The WebRTC components have been optimized to best serve this purpose."
You can host it yourself, internal, inside of your firewall if you're that security paranoid.
There are also solutions hosted by other people if you don't want to deal with that:

Re:Why do people claim security...
... while they're using untested and not standardized (hell, not even Version 1) protocols? Example, Discord using WebRTC and claiming it's secure.
WebRTC testing in Chrome? There, some testing? Or did you want some security testing of WebRTC? Seems tested to me?
It's using DTLS to handle encryption which is fairly standardized and provided by every most multi-purpose encryption libraries out there.
Is this another of your stories? All you have to do is call "TempDog", that's all it takes!

Why!
Let it die, stop using it!!
It is only used because "other" people use it, no one like it... stop using it and let it die, everyone will win.
Now with webrtc, the standard for chat is webchat, with FULL video, audio support. Just use the build in "firefox hello", https://appear.in/ , https://apprtc.webrtc.org/ , https://talky.io/ , https://www.voicechatapi.com/ or https://meet.jit.si/ and you will never need skype again . If you need a client with a full "friend list", you can use plain old irc or jabber and send the link, or simply use jitsi and use it as you usually use skype... all free, all working
Again, stop using skype and use open standards

WebRTC Solution
WebRTC seems to be the best way now to communicate and avoid all the spying. It is supported by Firefox, Chrome, and Opera browsers. It does audio, video, text and file transfers. The media streams are all encrypted and once connected the media streams from browser to browser with no middle man/web site.

WebRTC
WebRTC is the future of real-time video. As an example, check out vLine link.

Thanks, Microsoft!
I think we should all be thankful to Microsoft for taking this crucial step to help promote uptake of WebRTC implementations to replace Skype.

Re:Putting the pressure on Microsoft - nice!
I'm sure Opera support will be along shortly, since they're one of the three partners (along with Google and Mozilla) supporting the WebRTC initiative.
From the http://webrtc.org/ front page:
"The WebRTC initiative is a project supported by Google, Mozilla and Opera. This page is maintained by the Google Chrome team." -
For those in need of VoIP
Enable WebRTC in Chromium (about:flags), and use https://apprtc.appspot.com/. Here's the code if they block the rendes-vouz server: http://www.webrtc.org/blog/sourcecodetoapprtcappspotcomexampleappavailable

Re:WebM
And finally some, like Skype are simply legacy users that were using this codec before it was open sourced (V7 in this case) and have since actually partially moved away from it (h.264 for HD chat).
Rather than moving away from it, Skype has been adding support for VP8 over the last year:
http://gigaom.com/video/skype-vp8-video-conferencing/
http://blog.webmproject.org/2011/08/one-to-one-vp8-video-calling-now.htmlIf H.264 Baseline is not offered under a royalty-free licence before the 15th of March 2012, then VP8 will be the required video codec for WebRTC. See the the Video Codec Requirements section of the WebRTC IETF draft: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-cbran-rtcweb-codec-01. This is why semiconductor companies are keen to promote their WebM support:
Of course, it's unlikely that H.264 Baseline will be royalty-free before the 15th so VP8 will likely be the required video codec. Still, it could happen and if it does then everyone can implement support for H.264 Baseline in their browsers without issue.

Go with Web RTC
Web RTC Site
It's what Google Hangouts uses. I would love to set up some sort of Web RTC server on my own system to use. -
Direct Link
TFA provides nothing useful over the site itself, other than a bunch of hover-over-this-text ads.
