Try OpenWengo
Try OpenWengo. It works as well as Skype. It is encrypted with the "NG release", available now. The download page says "secure PC-to-PC calls". See this discussion about encryption. It's Open Source. Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Re:The real problem with cell phones...Web'n'walk fair use policy
Subject to coverage. Compatible handset required. Provides unlimited browsing on mobile handsets in the UK. Not applicable to connection via CSD. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers a fair use policy applies. T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data (both sent and received) of up to 1GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 1GB of data and ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied. Not to be used for other activities (including but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads, internet phone calls and instant messaging. If such use is detected, notice may be given after which network protection controls may be applied. The application of network protection controls will result in a reduced speed of transmission. It looks like they will give you a warning if they notice you are doing something they think they should make a profit on.
ahem this looks interesting

The proxy address is : 213.91.9.210
The domain name server is : voip.wengo.fr
using that directly is liable to get you cut off but would it be difficult to connect via your own network
http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/vpn/pda/docs/ppc2 003.html should give a few clues on connecting a vpn client on a pda to vpn server on your network openswan seems to what you need running on your own network
anyone got anything like this up and running? -
What are your experiences? Wengo links.
Wengo is advertising itself as a Skype replacement. The free WengoPhone is Open Source and SIP (telephone standards) compatible.
Does anyone have experience with Wengo? Skype is excellent, of course, but not open source and not compatible with standards.

"Who is Wengo? People like you all over the world
and the team: 35 people in France keeping you in touch."
Wengo started in 2005. "Wengo is a subsidiary of the group neufcegetel."
Confusion: It is difficult to find their telephone service rates pages. The one linked is for the countries beginning with B.
Debian Wengo: Package: wengophone (2.0.0~rc5-svn8108-2) "SIP-based software telephone with video and chat features."
Observations: Their web site is confused. The site is incorrectly translated to English in some places. -

waiting for wengophone2
don't like skype because of closed source, p2p and not open?
keep your eyes on wengophone then: free, open source, supports msn, jabber, yahoo and other protocols, uses sip, can send sms, video calls, can handle conference (just up to 3 users for now), and it even costs a bit less than skype on skypeout. it only lacks the skype-in function and crypted traffic, but both will be integrated in near future. for windows, linux & mac for now, they're developing even a firefox extension and one for pda with wince. -
there _is_ something else
Like wengo (http://www.wengo.com/) for example.
Yes, still in beta for now, but it's really promising: all skype features, supports more IM protocols (msn, jabber, yahoo...), opensource, for win/mac/linux/pda, uses sip, calls to landlines and cellphones cost less then with skype...
it's not really ready now, since crypt support is being studied now, still doesn't have "skype-in" or contact-list on server, but this all is planned, and seems a very interesting project to me... -
Frauds
They were touted as the open source alternative to skype. but look all over their forums, people are calling them frauds. Because, people buy credits worth 10 Euro, and then are unable to make any calls. All the support guys on the forum have just one thing to say "It will be sorted within a day or 2!" And now this. I really doubt their business model and how are they making money. And I am not trolling over here. Head over to The support forum And do you know another thing, if you watch the lower window part while login, you can see your password in plain text. Yes its sent in https, but something which shows my password in plain view... well scary. Did not expect such bloopers from what is being touted as the open source answer to skype

Um?
How is this the first? Especially since you can use Wengo on Macs and Linux.

Re:Not the 1st: Wengo beat them to the punch
You mean this one here? For some reason it fails to install for my with a "Coming soon
..." message. ;-) The non-FF extension Wengo is pretty cool though! -
Not the 1st: Wengo beat them to the punchWengo's had a Firefox multi-plateform (Mac, PC, Linux) and multi-architecture (x86, PPC) VoIP extension available for about 4 months now. See it here
Wengo btw is my operator of choice here in Europe with top-notch voice quality and reliability with prices lower than Skype. Only problem is their inbound number is France only atm. Did I mention that they have a working Gaim port?

Re:No there isn't one after all
Hm, I take that back. Looks like the linux version is unavailable and being ported - as you said. The site I was looking at, was actually openwengo, - much better than the zoep site. My bad.
The Wengo Firefox Extension has indeed already been released for Win32, and builds for both Mac OS X and GNU/Linux will be available shortly.
A recent
.DEB package of the classic "desktop" WengoPhone and full source code is available from the recently redesigned OpenWengo developer website. The crew hangs out on freenode #openwengo - come and say hi ;)
