Zoep Goes Open Source
An anonymous reader writes "Voipster has released their Zoep client-side VoIP engine as an open source project licensed under the GPL (now called OpenZoep) along with an OpenZoep Firefox extension. If you've been thinking about incorporating a VoIP soft phone client into your project, this article details the API and discusses how to work with the OpenZoep client."
At first I looked at the topic and was sure it's a typo
Anagram("United States of America") == "Dine out, taste a Mac, fries"
Gaim 2.0 (currently in beta) actually has support for SIP/SIMPLE thanks to the Google Summer of Code.
So we've actually had VoIP capabilities in open source projects since last summer.
My blog
Does OpenZoep run on Zope? Who comes up with these names? I swear, these names sound like they come from a Dr. Seuss book. "If you hope to wash soup off a rope, simply scrub it with SKROPE! Skrope is so strong that no rope is too long!"
[
Not to be confused with the already opensource Zopeweb application server.
How do you mod something informative but off-topic?
"You'll get nothing, and you'll like it!"
Wash your mouth out with Zoep!
PHP121 Instant Messenger - Web Based Instant Messenger
This is it. This is the big one.
An open source VOIP app that just plugs into your browser. Now, the only question is, does it support SMTP style aliases?
May the Maths Be with you!
The Zoep Firefox extension can be downloaded from here: http://www.glaxstar.com/zoep/. I sometimes have connection problems, but in general it has worked quite well.
Favorite quote: "
Even if GAIM has SIP/SIMPLE in the 2.0.0 beta releases, it's only for the text portions of SIP. (Yes, SIP supports text-based instant messaging. Shockingly, Microsoft Windows Messenger (not MSN Messenger) uses SIP as its default protocol.
GAIM does *NOT* have "vv" (voice and video) support in the current 2.0.0 beta release, and will not have it in 2.0.0 final. It was planned, but removed because it wasn't anywhere close to ready. RTFGN (Read The Fing GAIM News).
retrorocket.o not found, launch anyway?
The tarball URL on their webpage comes back with an error (no such file). Anybody know where a valid tarball might be?
And it goes 0 - 60 mph in 5 seconds, as you can see from the Ploen site.
openwengo has a SIP/VoIP plugin for mozilla already available. openwengo is sponsored by wengo, itself a subsidary of neuf telecom a french telco.

sipX:

Google's Libjingle:

In their infos, they say that their goal is to make Zoep work on as many platforms as possible, but as of today, the only platform where it runs is Windows. No MacOS and no Linux version. Zoep is supposed to be "ported" some day.
I thought that Jingle was the way to go for Jabber with SIP support
these guys seem to be doing it differantly...
can someone please tell me otherwise ?
(and why)

There is a Linux version. Right on the front page, they offer versions for Windows and Linux. The Linux version has video too. They are still improving it but a working version is there to download - 3.5MB in size. Two other versions under development are mentioned but not available for download - Mac and Palm. May be you got confused by that?
Hm, I take that back. Looks like the linux version is unavailable and being ported - as you said. The site I was looking at, was actually openwengo, - much better than the zoep site. My bad.
The Wengo Firefox Extension has indeed already been released for Win32, and builds for both Mac OS X and GNU/Linux will be available shortly.
A recent .DEB package of the classic "desktop" WengoPhone and full source code is available from the recently redesigned OpenWengo developer website. The crew hangs out on freenode #openwengo - come and say hi ;)
Are there any actively maintained open source voip programs that support encrypted connections? I'm currently filling that need with speakfreely. It does the job well, but has it's shortcomings.
Skype is almost there, but I find it unsuitable for conversing with folks using dial-up connections, in addition to not being open source.
Will this engine run on any Linux phone, over EDGE or EVDO?
