Re:Fool the system?
There's not much about it, but the Whistle InterJet pop3 server seems to support it, so there's at least one implementation on UNIX.

Re:This is a battle that should not exist
Where is the industry interest in the BSD license?
BSDi
Intel InBusiness Storage Station
Whistle They even mention contributing back code on the job listing link.
Yahoo
I believe BSDi, Whistle and Yahoo have all contributed code and fixes back to FreeBSD. I have no idea if Intel does or not. -
Re:NLFUGThere's also going to be a port to PowerPC (in part, to support the MacOS X/Darwin effort, I would assume), they're looking at doing lots more "appliances" (e.g., Whistle/IBM InterJet II, Stallion ePipe, NetWolves FoxBox, and even perhaps going after the higher-end market like the NFS/CFS and web proxy cache servers from Network Appliance).
They're also going to be pushing partnerships & co-marketing a lot harder, as well as a branding and pre-installation program so that you can make sure that the machine you buy is 100% compatible with FreeBSD, or you can even get FreeBSD pre-installed on the machine.
There's a lot more that they're going to be doing. I'm just waiting for the updated plans to be posted to the web pages of Jordan K. Hubbard, CTO of Walnut Creek and soon to be CTO of the merged BSD, Inc.

BSD, Linux, NT, who cares -- it's an applianceI used to work for FreeGate, a competitor to then Whistle, now IBM. Noone cares what kind of OS is running underneath unless you're a die hard techno-weenie. These things are built to be black boxes. The use of open source OS's is helping build an industry by lowering the cost of goods sold (and maybe entry costs, but that's a very big debate).
What annoys the hell out of me is that Cobalt made a killing in the stock market selling blue colored Linux boxes with practically no value added (unless you really like blue). In comparison, Interjets and OneGates have a lot of extra features that you can't get anywhere eles. But who gets the ridiculous valuation?

Re:Two factorsI said: You are assuming that they don't give back any changes. From my experience, this is generally false.
Anonymous coward said:Could you give some precise references so we can add this to the demythification list, please?
To give just a few examples:
- Whistle Communications - Netgraph, IPFW (firewall) improvements, soft updates porting, numerous bugfixes, mpd.
- Plutotech - CAM, including the full SCSI subsystem of FreeBSD.
- NetMax - Volumization and extended RAID support
- Oracle's Network Computing - significant work on the VM system
- Pavilion Internet and Yes Interactive - Improvement of the ISDN system so it can integrate with the standard userland PPP in FreeBSD
This is just a short list off the top of my head. There are a lot of other cases.
