Re:My Question
Besides the fact that Wikipedia likes the neutral point of view, Wikimedia (who runs the site) is trying to register as a tax-exempt organization, for fundraising! fundraising! fundraising! purposes. That may potentially restrict what the Foundation may do from that perspective.

Re:The constant bickering...Wiki may be fast- instant edits, et cetera- but dispute resolution is often slow, what with article disputes, debate on a talk page, protection of pages in edit wars, mediation, Requests for Comment, Requests for Arbitration, and Arbitration itself.
(While wiki is fast, I refrain from saying that Wikipedia is fast; why not donate today so that they can buy new servers and make it that way?

Re:Advertising?
Wikipedia is a registered not-for-profit, so it hasn't paid off in a narrow economic sense, and isn't planned to.
There are no ads in wikipedia, and no plans to introduce ads as far as I know. The only source of funding is donations. Wikipedia could use more funding than it currently has, to deal with expected growth and perhaps to hire a few full-time employees. You can donate here. -

Re:Funding - situation, what we spent the money on
If anyone wants to donate, as one of the hardware people, I'd rather see monthly recurring payments of a smaller amount than a lump sum. It makes it easier for me to try to predict what we can buy based on some moderate predictability of available funds.
Excellent idea. I didn't happen to notice a PayPal subscribe link on your fundraising page, though. I can't figure out how to make paypal send you regular amounts without one, either. Any chance you would put one up there? I could part with a fistful of USD every month or 6 for your service.
Thanks!
(PS: no, I can't edit the page with the paypal links on it myself for somewhat obvious reasons)

donation-based wikipedia
Please mod this up out of importance.
Please don't forget that Wikipedia is totally advertisement free and free information. In order to make this possible, you're donations are greatly needed. Please donate and help to keep this information free and available for all of us.

Re:Funding? It was temporarily resolved, but they have problems with maintaining funding stability in the long term. Here is the fundraising page which explains their financial situation (9k dollars -> not much) and is also the place to donate to Wikipedia
Almost all the money disappears immediately on servers to keep the online editing system going.

Re:Funding?
No they havent. Frequent shutdowns are there. The best way is to Make a donation. The amount of knowledge on Wikipedia dwarfs other encyclopedias.

Cash flow
The minute you mention 'money' many get amnesia and offer themselves excuses not to dish out a dime.
True, but there's always a lot of people who are quick to reach into their pockets if asked. Whenever I browse a web site that turns out to be really useful or interesting, and I spot a tip-jar link, I'm good for a few bucks. (Or at least I was when I was employed.) I'm always going to Wikipedia -- you can't really avoid them, not if you use Google at all. But I never contributed, because their "donate" link is small and easy to overlook on those messy pages. Plus it leads to a poorly-maintained click-to-pay page that's hardly encouraging to would-be donors.I certainly encourage folks to donate, and I would myself if I had any cash at all. A small but eye-catching graphic and a properly maintained donation page would make a lot of difference. They'll probably get all the money they need for this crisis just from Slashdotters. (I mean $20K divided by 100K Slashdot readers, even allowing for a 90% apathy factor...) But I hope they'll put a stronger fundraising strategy in place for the long term.
