Re:Duh!
and then when it crashes and you can't slave it into another system to get data from it, you're hosed.
What are you talking about? You can decrypt a FileVault volume from any connected Mac machine, if you know (or can guess) the password. I've personally done this, it works fine.
As far as brute-force protection, the PBKDF is set to about 250ms. So depending on the entropy of the password could take anywhere from 20 computer days (or a few hours on a big AWS instance) to 8000 years (beyond all the computing power on planet earth).

Better Cameras
My daughter is a Shriners' patient. I've taken her to the Tampa hospital for telemedicine visits on numerous occasions. I've discussed telemedicine with the doctors and other staff because i was interested.
For security, they aren't using internet - they're using ISDN lines and direct dial connections. Obviously this means the bandwidth requirements are tiny since it can work over ISDN.
Even the high end videoconferencing system they bought was insufficient in video quality. The camera just didn't draw enough light and have sufficient optical zoom for high quality zoomed in video. They had to buy an external video camera and cable it to an aux input port on the system. You could probably do what was needed using a modern DSLR with a good lens.
Further, we went to a hospital. This not only ensured the right camera equipment was available to the patient. It also allowed the specialist doctor to instruct local non specialists on how/what to do for minor procedures.
The whole thing worked out great, but it was slightly more involved than I thought it would be. Judging by other comments on this post, most people don't understand this.
. is the system that has been augmented with a better camera. The photo does not show the better camera. -
Re:The real issue
By "weak area" I meant (for example) the 5% a student gets wrong when they score 95% on a test, not a "subject" they're weak in. This weak area could be in a subject they are very good at and enjoy. And when you talk about tests not being an effective form of motivation, that's exactly what I meant too. Unfortunately, the argument that students wouldn't be motivated to learn without upcoming tests is one I've heard numerous times, and it's just wrong. In fact, I agree with everything you say. If there was a misunderstanding, it may be due to the fact that language was a weak subject of mine as well.
Our school specifically gives choice to students so they are able to follow their interests. We expose them to everything, but where it leads is up to them. Unfortunately, there's not much good information online about our elementary programs, but at least here's a quick comparison vs. mainstream education.

Re:Let's keep the tree green
Congress, say.
And of course 'instantly' would be too gestapo for real life. We'd really want a grace period with escalating warnings, followed by fines, followed by pulling-the-plug.
And it'd be much better if industry came up with this on its own first. What's the state of the art?
Rackspace talks about security,
http://www.rackspace.com/managed_hosting/services/security/
but doesn't seem to offer proactive vulnerability scanning, and if they did, they would charge for it instead of just doing it.Godaddy seems to offer this as an extra cost
service instead of just doing it:
http://www.godaddy.com/security/website-security.aspxHere's one wordpress hosting provider that promises to install all security updates within one hour (wow):
https://wpengine.com/security/So, industry guys, can we get our act together and offer security scans and upgrades as part of the basic service plan?
