We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

Here is the EFF's stance on this case.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Apple described the use of windowing in an old Apple II technical note back in September 1990.
See a copy of ProDOS 8 technical note #28 here.

It contains the following:

A seven-bit ProDOS year value is in the range 0 to 99 (100 through 127 are invalid)

Year values from 40 to 99 represent 1940 through 1999

Year values from 0 to 39 represent 2000 through 2039

The best part of this technote is Apple's advice for 2039...

Hey man, I want to use Linux, but my brother either hasn't had the time to hook me up with Linux or doesn't want to. I used Linux for a short time, but I didn't really know what I was doing. Now, a year later, I think I know more than I used to and I could use it as a good desktop operating system.

I don't want to be thought of as a Dino or whatever that is... I hate Windoze.

Be sure to check out the www.clariion.com web page for information on their fibre-channel external RAID units. These units can be managed separately through their own console connection and support redundant everything, including I/O controllers. They support Sun and Solaris. The box also supports hot spares, so if one disk fails, another is automatically bound into the RAID group and rebuilt. With just a single hot spare, you'd have to lose two disks before risking data loss.

As for me, I'm considering their lower end SCSI boxes connected to high-end Intel server running Linux, beings I have $52,000 to spend this year! (yippee). The idea is to put all the money where the valuables are (the data) and use commodity hardware and open source software to drive it. The OS would boot from internal HD and all data and local customizations (ie, /usr/local) would be on external RAID box. If a CPU box fails, unplug it from the array, plug in a spare CPU box, reboot. Minimal downtime due to hardware problems. I can then repair or replace the busted CPU box at ease.

For linux jockies, there is efforts to bring fibre-channel drivers to Linux. Be sure to look at the work at Worcester Polytech for info.

I need to nitpick one point:

* Prerequsites are "bad". Ever been in a class with an obnoxious moron without the prerequisites, who nags the professor to explain things he should already know?

From first hand experience at WPI I can tell you that the lack of prerequisites has been beneficial to my education. I have been able to take upper-level courses for which I have the prerequisite knowledge, just not the prerequisite credit. If that's not enough, it's understood that I take the class at my own risk. Failing is my problem, not the school's.
Also, a good professor should be able to keep up with the pace of the course despite the few lagging students.

Big Money! Big Prizes! I love it!

Of course, if it costs half of what a CHRP board cost a friend ($800 m'thinks) I'll probably get it, even though it's not strictly a dollar.

Why... it could run BeOS DR4.0 [probably 4.5 too], or MacOS 8.5... with the ROM from my PMAC8500. There is an Apple ROM Slot in this design isn't there? There probably isn't; I'll live. Most importantly it could run Linux/PPC. Well.

If it had a ZIF socket (or 4) and was G4 ready, that'd be extra jolly nice of the people.

Q: Does anyone here dislike Intel at least half as much as they dislike Microsoft? I've vowed against supporting either... I've also vowed against snuff videos, but thats different. I mean that whole Intel/Digital thing was bad.

I'd keep my 604; even though its only 120 MHz.

Ahhh... yes, we must make sure the techies are as ethical as the graduates from Liberal Arts Schools like... erm... Political Science majors? Nono... Marketing people? Uh... Lawyers? Hm. Maybe not.

The school I went to ( WPI) does emphasize the "squishy stuff" so that engineers turn out better capable of working within society, not just within their technical discipline. In theory, anyhow. Personally, I don't think any amount of schooling will teach you ethics. A sense of ethics is something that you choose to develop or not. Schooling in it can guide amd mold your ethics, but if you're a jerk, you'll be a jerk, no matter if you have a B.S. or a B.A.

The problem is what to do with GED-toting geeks.

I finished my four years in High School. While I won't bore everyone with a blow-by-blow, I too was struck at firsy with empathy for the shooters.

Like many, I endured and escaped to a fine college ( WPI) where I found myself and started the real life that I now live. And like most, even though High School is now almost a decade behind me, memories of it still haunt me sometimes.

The problem is, I don't know what would have been better. My college accepted advanced High School students through something called the "Massachusetts Academy". These kids were allowed to go "to college" during the day instead of High School, to take special classes and some regular college classes, and get their HS diploma that way.

The problem was, though they tried to fit in, they couldn't. Some were just HS Juniors (and maybe even younger) and were not equipped for the college life. Many were immature, so they were spurned by the students. Sadly, some of the girls were taken advantage of by our male-dominated student body. They all just weren't ready for college.

The same applied to many of the "early entrance" students who left High School a year (or two) early to go to college. They were woefully prepared for the college life, emotionally.

So if college isn't the right place for many of these poor geeks, where should they go? I think the only real option is private or magnet High Schools. They should go somewhere where they really can blossom emotionally and that will prepare them to take their deserved places in society.

Misfit students should not be forced to endure "chicken coop" schools, but they shouldn't be forced into a college world they can not yet handle.

I currently go to high school. I live in a small area of New York, go to a small Catholic high school. I am about as close to a hardcore nerd that you will find around here, although I will not claim to be as into it as some. But enough.

I assume because of the size of my area and school, I have not had nearly the trouble that is described here. I do fit the description though, every last point of it. I'm a nerd, a geek, whatever you want to refer to us as. But I am certainly no killer. I have played my fair share of violent games. But I am certainly no killer. It takes a heck of a lot more than that to "make" a person into a killer. There have to be pre-existing conditions, other problems, with deeper roots. Simply spending time in front of a computer screen doesn't turn a person into a cold-blooded killer.

I also know what it is like to have high school as a living hell. Middle school too. For years I have been singled out as the geek, the smart one who no one likes, but everyone suddenly is best friends with when they need help on their homework. It is, by no means, fun. Others are envious, jealous of the abilities of the geeks, the nerds. They turn that jealousy into hate, rage, and insults. They take out their own percieved inadequacy on us. For what reason? Simply because they are, themselves, too weak to handle it!

I, however, am somewhat atypical in a different way. I have found a way out, an escape from high school, away from the mindless peers who feel the need to raise themselves up by putting others down. No, I'm not going to kill people and go to jail (interesting, but stupid idea). I'm leaving high school, and going to a more conductive, productive environment at college/university. I want everyone to know that you can do it too. It is possible, and even sometimes encouraged, to leave high school a year early, go to college, fulfill your freshman year there, which concurrently filling your senior graduation requirements and graduating with your class. Some special programs exist for people wishing to do this. The ones I have encountered are at The University of Southern California and Clarkson University. Despite my acceptance to the Clarkson School (their special program), I have decided to take my education to the next level at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, whose support and project-based curriculum caught my eye.

So, my point is, you can do something about your situation. Those of you still early in your high school years, maybe there is less you can do. But there is hope ahead. Never give up, never forget who you are. Do not let yourself be defined by what is "in" or "cool." Be who you are, and do it without hurting others. Be persistent, and you will be heard.

For example, the college which I attend, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, did up a remake of the web page for April Fools. However, they were smart enough to make it so that only IPs from within the wpi.edu and wpi.net domains actually were redirected to the parody page. Normal users still see the normal page (although they can get to the parody one).

For anybody who wants to see a whacked out college on crack for April Fools, check it out:
